As a fan, I’m really frustrated to hear that Electronic Arts is shutting down a game that only came out in 2022! It seems like EA has been closing the online servers for a lot of older games lately, which is understandable. Usually, those are titles from the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One days. But this is different – they’re ending support for a game that’s barely four years old, and it just feels too soon. It’s a really disappointing trend, and this feels like a particularly quick shutdown.
This week, EA announced that it will be taking down GRID Legends from the PlayStation and Xbox stores. Released in February 2022, Legends is the newest racing game in the popular GRID series created by Codemasters. When it first launched, the game received generally positive, though not outstanding, reviews, averaging a score of 76 out of 100 on Metacritic.
EA is shutting down the online servers for GRID Legends on PlayStation and Xbox consoles on September 11th, even though the game is relatively new. While you’ll still be able to buy and play GRID Legends on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, and Xbox One, you won’t be able to access any of the online features or modes. This means the main way to play the game will be through its single-player mode.
Starting September 11, 2026, EA will be shutting down the online services for GRID Legends on PlayStation and Xbox. This means features like online multiplayer, cross-platform play, Quick Race, Dynamic Events, and leaderboards will no longer work. However, players will still be able to enjoy the game’s story mode and offline racing.
It’s unexpected that EA is taking this step because it means all online features for the entire GRID series will be unavailable on PlayStation and Xbox consoles. EA recently shut down servers for GRID 2, GRID Autosport, and GRID (2019), one after another. While fans weren’t too concerned initially because GRID Legends was still online, EA has now decided to also take Legends offline. This effectively removes all online play for the GRID franchise on consoles, leaving only the PC version with continued online access.
EA might be planning a new GRID game, and that could be why they’re shutting down the servers for older versions. However, because the recent Legends game wasn’t very popular, it’s also possible that EA is ending its support for the GRID series altogether.
