EastEnders viewers learned today that Nigel Bates (played by Paul Bradley) has died, bringing sadness to Walford.
Bradley returned to his role in December 2024 after being away for 26 years, and it soon became clear that he wasn’t being truthful about something.
He finally told his old friend, Phil Mitchell, that he had early-onset dementia, and the two quickly rebuilt their childhood bond. As his condition got worse, Phil pledged to support him. However, in recent months, Nigel’s health declined rapidly, and he had to move into a care home. Phil felt he’d let his friend down and didn’t join the other visitors. When Grant Mitchell returned to Walford, he worried his brother was struggling with his mental health again. This fear grew when he found Phil searching the beach for a particular stone that Nigel had requested.

He helped the man say goodbye to his loved ones, and together they traveled to the care home. Despite a few difficulties along the way, Phil managed to get a ride on the back of a pizza delivery scooter, and he sat with Julie Bates (also known as Karen Henthorn) as the man passed away.
As the sun came up, Julie and her companion stayed at the building. Julie explained she was ready to go home now that her husband, Nigel, had passed away. She fondly remembered their time together, but acknowledged he was no longer with them.

In Albert Square, Kat Moon and her family quickly organized a memorial for him, inviting residents to watch a comedy film he’d produced last Christmas. Julie appreciated the thoughtful gesture, but Phil watched from a distance and eventually went home. There, he looked sadly around the empty living room, staring at the armchair where he’d spent countless hours.
He glanced at the photo of Nigel above the fireplace, a sudden determination washing over him. He was resolved to show everyone he wouldn’t fail this time. Without hesitation, he moved all the furniture outside and set it on fire.

Grant’s family watched with worry, but he understood why Phil was acting the way he was. He encouraged everyone to come inside and celebrate Nigel’s life with a spontaneous party. They shared stories about Nigel, and when Grant remembered Nigel’s fun-loving days in the 70s, everyone started dancing.
Instead of the typical Thames River map and EastEnders theme song, the closing credits featured a photo of Phil and Nigel, set to music by The Jam.
