Emma Willis Shares Holiday Plans Amid Bruce Willis’ Dementia Battle

Bruce Willis is surrounded by love this holiday season.

With Bruce Willis continuing to cope with frontotemporal dementia (FTD), his wife, Emma Heming Willis, recently explained how their family is making sure he still feels included in their celebrations and everyday life.

She explained in a recent interview with People that even through change, it’s important to learn, adjust, and create new memories while still honoring familiar traditions. Ultimately, she said, life continues, no matter what.

Three years after being diagnosed, the 70-year-old is receiving support from his family – including daughters Mabel, 13, and Evelyn, 11, and adult children Rumer, 37, Scout, 34, and Tallulah, 31 (with ex-wife Demi Moore) – who are focusing on the positive despite the difficulties, particularly during the holidays.

Even though dementia presents challenges, there’s still happiness to be found,” Emma explained. “It’s vital that we don’t focus solely on the negative aspects. People with dementia can still laugh and experience joy – it just manifests in different ways.

The model also mentioned that her husband, Bruce, whom she married in 2009, has always been full of Christmas spirit.

She explained that Bruce really enjoys Christmas, and they still celebrate it with him, though they’ve had to adjust how they do things.

Last month, Emma talked about how her daughters are handling their father’s illness, and acknowledged it’s difficult for them when he can’t be present for significant events in their lives.

She told Vogue Australia that while people often say “kids are resilient,” she used to dislike that phrase because it didn’t acknowledge the difficulty of their situation. She isn’t sure if her children will fully recover, but she sees them—and herself—growing and learning through the experience.

Similarly, Rumer recently shared the silver lining she has drawn from her dad’s ailment.

She shared in an Instagram video on November 20th how happy she is to still be able to hug her loved one. She expressed gratitude that even if he doesn’t recognize her, they can still share a loving connection through their hugs, and she can feel his love in return. Seeing even a small sign of his personality and being able to give and receive love feels wonderful to her.

As Bruce’s FTD journey continues, keep reading for a closer look at his family tree.

Rising stars Bruce Willis and Demi Moore first met in August 1987 at the premiere of the comedy film Stakeout. Interestingly, neither of them appeared in the movie, but Demi was there to support her former fiancé, Emilio Estevez, who did.

Bruce had recently gone through a breakup, and Demi, previously married to Freddy Moore from 1981 to 1985, was open to meeting someone new.

In her 2019 memoir, Inside Out, Demi Moore, known as the Ghost star, wrote that they immediately discussed their shared desire to start a family and have children.

They fell in love quickly and, just months after meeting, spontaneously eloped in Las Vegas while attending a boxing match. They got married at the Golden Nugget hotel on November 21, 1987, and followed it up with a larger, more formal wedding celebration a month later, where Little Richard performed the ceremony.

Although their marriage had difficult moments – Demi later wrote about how unstable things became, even as early as 1990 when Bruce questioned whether he wanted to be married – they publicly appeared to be a perfect Hollywood couple until they announced their separation in 1998.

But they remained a family unit.

In 2000, Bruce told Rolling Stone that he still loved Demi and they remained very close. They were committed to co-parenting their three children and felt as connected as ever, recognizing their ongoing responsibility to their kids and the continuation of their friendship.

Demi has said she and Bruce started trying to have a child even before their whirlwind wedding.

Oh my gosh, can you believe it? It all makes sense now! Rumer Glenn Willis – her name! – was born on August 16th, 1988, in Paducah, Kentucky. He was filming In Country there at the time, which is just… perfect. It’s like everything led to her being born! I knew there had to be a reason he was there, and it was for Rumer! It’s just so amazing to think about.

For several years after Rumer was born, her parents often showed home movies of her birth when they had guests over – it was the highlight of their parties.

Demi recalled in a 1991 interview with Vanity Fair that Bruce stayed with her for the full 15 hours of labor, only leaving briefly once to use the restroom.

Rumer Willis was nine years old when her parents separated, and she still admires how well they continued to co-parent. In an October 2024 interview with People magazine, she shared that they always made sure to share family traditions, saying, ‘We never had to split family vacations, Christmases, or birthdays.’

In a 2015 interview with Larry King, she explained that her parents consistently prioritized family togetherness. They always made a point of attending events as a complete family, ensuring they functioned as a single unit rather than two separate entities, and she believes this had a significant positive effect.

Rumer had a daughter, Louetta Isley Thomas Willis, with musician Derek Richard Thomas on April 18, 2022.

The actress from My Divorce Party revealed that she named her baby after three of her father’s favorite musicians: Louis Armstrong, Etta James, and the Isley Brothers.

“She’s an absolute delight,” said Demi, a proud grandmother, in an interview with TopMob News in January 2024. “It’s everything everyone says about having a grandchild – all the happiness and fun, plus you get to relax and enjoy a good night’s sleep!”

As many of you know, Rumer and Derek ended their relationship back in August, and honestly, it’s inspiring to see how she’s handling it. She’s publicly thanked her parents for showing her what truly successful co-parenting looks like, and I think that’s beautiful. It’s a great reminder that even through change, prioritizing your children and maintaining a respectful relationship with your ex is possible – and it starts with learning from positive examples.

Rumer Willis shared in October 2024 that her relationship with her father, Derek, remains strong. She told People magazine they’ve successfully maintained both a close friendship and a positive co-parenting dynamic, and both are very happy with this arrangement for themselves and their daughter, Lou.

Scout LaRue Willis was born on July 20, 1991, in Sun Valley, Idaho. Her parents chose to raise her and her siblings outside of Hollywood during their childhood years.

Not that they didn’t do glitz and glam.

Demi Moore made headlines in August 1991 when she appeared nude and pregnant on the cover of Vanity Fair. The photo, taken while she was expecting her second daughter, became incredibly famous and has been copied many times since.

“Pregnancy agrees with me,” she told the magazine. “I feel comfortable.”

Although Scout appeared in a few of her parents’ films when she was younger, she was more passionate about photography and music. After graduating from Brown University, she released her first album, also titled ‘Scout,’ in 2022.

Scout was already proud of her mom, Demi, even before Demi won a Golden Globe for The Substance. She told everyone how great her mom was in the darkly comedic and unsettling horror movie.

In November 2024, Scout told Us Weekly that she was incredibly impressed by this woman, whom she deeply admired for her beauty, talent, and bravery. Scout felt it was inspiring that she was so authentically herself and shared that vulnerability, knowing how many people it impacted.

Tallulah Belle Willis was born Feb. 3, 1994, in Hailey, Idaho.

Bruce once shared with Rolling Stone in 2000 that people had offered various reasons for his experiences, some suggesting it was karma. He admitted some found it amusing that the tough action star was a devoted father to daughters. But he quickly added, “I’d have three more daughters tomorrow if I could. They’re amazing.”

When Tallulah was in third grade, her family—the Willis-Moores—moved from Idaho to Los Angeles. This gave her a more Hollywood-centered childhood than her sisters, but it wasn’t a positive experience.

The founder of the clothing brand Wyllis has openly shared her struggles with addiction, beginning with getting sober at age 20. She later sought treatment for depression at 25 and then faced a battle with anorexia. In a 2023 essay for Vogue, she explained that medication she took for ADHD, while beneficial, also reduced her appetite, which worsened her concerns about her weight.

Following another stay in treatment, prompted by her father’s worsening health – the family had revealed Bruce Willis’s aphasia diagnosis in March 2022 – Tallulah received a diagnosis of borderline personality disorder.

Honestly, reading her Vogue piece just… wrecked me in the best way. She admitted recovery is something she’ll probably deal with forever, but it’s not a bad thing! She finally feels equipped to live her life, to really be there, and especially to rebuild her relationship with her dad. It’s like, she’s finally taking control, and it’s so inspiring. I’ve read that sentence like a million times!

Tallulah shared the happy news of her engagement to musician Justin Acee on Christmas Eve. He proposed at her future mother-in-law’s house in Idaho, and a family member was there to film the proposal.

After his divorce from Demi Moore, Bruce Willis didn’t expect to fall in love again. But in 2007, he met Emma Heming, a model born in Malta, at their shared gym.

In a 2009 interview with W magazine, the Die Hard actor revealed he was unhappy for much of the past decade while being single. He admitted to feeling down and initially believing that a relationship wouldn’t solve his problems. He used to tell himself he wasn’t lonely, even though he was just trying to convince himself of that.

He said his life improved significantly after he began dating Emma, who is 23 years younger than him, and seeing her regularly.

Bruce Willis and Emma Heming married on March 21, 2009, in a beach ceremony at their home in Turks and Caicos. Demi Moore, who was married to Ashton Kutcher at the time, and their daughters Rumer, Scout, and Tallulah, were also there. Bruce and Demi later divorced in 2011 after six years of marriage.

On December 29, 2024, Emma will celebrate 17 years of marriage. Having openly discussed the challenges of her husband’s illness, she recently shared that “unconditional love” is what keeps their relationship strong.

She expressed gratitude for the experience, saying it was all thanks to him. She added that she would repeat it countless times without hesitation.

Following Bruce’s diagnoses of aphasia and, later, dementia, Emma started Make Time Wellness, a company creating supplements for brain and prenatal health. She also began hosting the Make Time Podcast.

In 2023, Emma told TopMob News that speaking up is crucial. She explained that taking action, raising awareness, and simply talking about issues are all ways to create positive change.

Emma and Bruce Willis had a daughter, Mabel Ray, on April 1st, 2012, in Los Angeles. The family later moved to Bedford Hills, New York.

In 2017, Emma told Elle Decor that one of the best things about their home was its location – close enough to the city to enjoy its amenities, but still offering a sense of escape.

Even though they lived far apart, Scout, Tallulah, and Demi remained close friends with Mabel. They all came together in June 2024 to celebrate her finishing sixth grade.

“We love her!!!” Tallulah commented on Instagram. “7th grade here we go!”

When Evelyn Penn Willis was born on May 5, 2014, Bruce happily announced he now had five daughters.

You know, after our baby arrived, we were actually surprised by the gender! It was a lovely surprise. And honestly, I’ve always believed women should lead the way in most things. They just have a natural intuition and brilliance that I truly admire. I think a lot of us guys would agree!

Emma shared with Elle Decor that Bruce was very accommodating and happily made time for their daughters, always going with the flow.

She explained that he’s become very generous with his time because he’s been a parent for so long and is accustomed to prioritizing his children’s needs over his own.

Emma described her family as traditional, emphasizing that they prioritize family above all else. They focus on teaching their children good manners, grace, and the value of education. However, they also encourage self-expression, allowing their kids to be themselves as long as it’s reasonable. Importantly, they work hard to avoid raising spoiled children and strive to find a healthy balance in their parenting approach.

Emma has been honest with Mabel and Evelyn about their father’s health, but she’s also making an effort to create positive experiences for them. She’s been sharing videos from their recent trip to Paris and decorating for Christmas at home to bring some joy to their lives.
