The final season of The Boys has concluded, and the Prime Video series didn’t shy away from letting characters go – some deaths were predictable, others were a surprise. Despite some worries about how it would all end, the finale, “Blood and Bone,” generally delivers. While the characters from Gen V aren’t used as much as they could be, the action is exciting, the emotional moments hit hard, and most characters receive a fitting conclusion to their stories, even if it means their death. Warning: Spoilers ahead for The Boys Season 5, Episodes 1-8.
Compared to the original The Boys comics, the show offers a more optimistic ending. While many characters die in the Season 5 finale, most of them are villains getting what they deserve. There are only two exceptions that feel particularly sad: the loss of an animal character and the death of someone who struggled with doing the right thing until the very end.
5) Oh-Father

Okay, let’s talk about Oh-Father. As one of the newer supes on The Boys, and desperately trying to get Homelander’s approval, I figured he was safe. Boy, was I wrong! The show loves a shocking moment, and they delivered with his death – a truly ridiculous one, even for The Boys. It turns out Ashley’s custom-made titanium ball gag – supposedly explosion-proof even against a sonic scream – does exactly what it’s supposed to. M.M. uses it on Oh-Father to protect Hughie, and… well, let’s just say it’s a messy, explosive end. Honestly, it felt perfectly in line with the show’s over-the-top style and gave us one last, satisfyingly gruesome scene before the credits rolled.
4) The Deep

During the chaotic attack on the White House in Episode 8 of The Boys, not only Oh-Father but also The Deep meets his end, providing a satisfying conclusion to his storyline. After Homelander dismisses him, The Deep is confronted by The Boys, but Starlight decides to take him on alone, urging the others to move forward. Their fight leads them to a beach where she offers him a final chance to admit his wrongdoing. When he refuses, she uses her powers to send him into the ocean. As Xander predicted, the sea creatures quickly finish him off, with an octopus delivering the final blow.
3) Homelander

Most viewers expected Homelander to die in the series finale of The Boys, and after a long history of wrongdoing, he finally meets his end. Kimiko, inspired by Frenchie’s memory, manages to neutralize his superpowers – along with Butcher’s and Ryan’s in the process. This leaves Butcher and Homelander to have the showdown fans have been anticipating. Butcher interrupts Homelander’s delusional broadcast about becoming a god and proceeds to brutally beat him on live television. Homelander desperately pleads for his life, offering anything for survival, but Butcher ultimately kills him with a crowbar. Despite the violence, it’s a satisfying conclusion to see Homelander utterly defeated before his death.
2) Terror

Man, the biggest shocker for me in The Boys Season 5 finale was definitely Terror dying. It completely broke Butcher, and honestly, it’s what finally made him go all-in on trying to wipe out all the supes – even though he’d said before it should only be a last resort. It wasn’t some big heroic death, either; it seemed like the poor dog just… died of old age. Which made it even sadder, because Terror was basically the last piece of Butcher’s life with Becca. I was glad they gave him a whole segment in Season 5, Episode 5, to honor him, but still… tough to watch.
1) Billy Butcher

The fifth season of The Boys ends with a heartbreaking and ultimately preventable death: Butcher’s. After Ryan refuses to connect with him as family and Terror dies, Butcher decides to release the supe virus, fearing Vought will simply replace Homelander with another dangerous figure once Stan Edgar returns to power. He rigs the sprinklers at Vought Tower to spread the virus, but Hughie stops him. A struggle ensues, and Hughie is forced to shoot Butcher to protect the supes. The death mirrors a moment from the The Boys comics, but it also gives Butcher a more sympathetic side. In his final moments, Butcher seems to recognize the person he’s become, claiming he had no other option. His death perfectly captures the darkness within him, while still showing, as Hughie points out, that he wasn’t completely without humanity.
