I’m so excited to see where James Gunn is taking the DC Universe! We’re all counting down the days for Supergirl, Lanterns, and Clayface to come out this year. Right now, he’s filming Man of Tomorrow, which is the sequel to his Superman movie. The story is going to be really interesting – Superman is actually teaming up with Lex Luthor to fight Brainiac! But honestly, the cast is what’s really getting people talking. They’ve been announcing new actors constantly, even though filming just started. This month alone, we found out Matthew Lillard (who James Gunn loves!) and Sinqua Walls from Friday Night Lights are joining the movie, and it looks like they’re still adding more people to the team!
A recent Variety article featuring Supergirl actress Milly Alcock confirmed she’ll be returning as Kara Zor-El in Man of Tomorrow. She’s scheduled to begin filming in Atlanta shortly. While specific details about her role are being kept secret, DC Studios’ Peter Safran stated that she will be a significant character in the project.
Is The Man of Tomorrow Cast Too Big?

Although Superman is the central character in Man of Tomorrow, he won’t be the only hero appearing in the film. Alongside David Corenswet as Superman, Kara Zor-El (Supergirl) will be played by Milly Alcock, and Aaron Pierre will return as John Stewart from Lanterns. There’s also buzz about other heroes potentially joining the cast. Adria Arjona is rumored to be playing Maxima, though some fans believe she might actually be the new Wonder Woman. Speculation surrounding Xolo Maridueña’s character is also high, with many suggesting he could be Cyborg or Steel. While this expansive cast is thrilling, it does make you wonder if the movie might have too many characters.
It’s understandable to be worried about having so many heroes in one movie. History shows us that films with large casts often struggle, as it’s hard to give everyone enough screen time, even in a long movie. This can leave some characters feeling underdeveloped and disappoint fans, or make certain actors seem like they were just included to please the audience. However, until we see more of the film and how it’s coming together, James Gunn deserves our trust based on his past work.
James Gunn consistently excels at developing a wide range of characters in his superhero movies. Both the Guardians of the Galaxy films and his Superman movie gave each team member significant screen time and depth. While Superman‘s central story focused on Kal-El grappling with his Kryptonian past, the film also skillfully introduced memorable versions of supporting characters like Guy Gardner, Hawkgirl, and Mr. Terrific. Gunn clearly understands what each story needs, and it’s likely he includes these characters because they are essential – not just to the larger DC Universe, but to the film itself.
It’s going to be exciting to see how Supergirl appears in Man of Tomorrow. She might just make a quick appearance, contacting Clark to see how her cousin is doing – much like Superman does in Supergirl. However, she could also have a more significant role. Given her powers, she’d be a valuable ally in the battle against Brainiac. The trailers for her own movie suggest Kara is ready to fully embrace her heroic side after dealing with personal loss. If Superman needs help, she’d likely be eager to jump in.
