Everything That’s Happened Since Rob Reiner & Michele Reiner’s Murder

Jake Reiner acknowledges people are fascinated by the circumstances of his parents’ deaths last December. However, for him, it’s not a captivating story to follow – it’s simply a deeply painful and unbelievable loss.

It started on December 14th when his sister, Romy Reiner, called with the devastating news that their father, the famous director Rob Reiner, had passed away. Just minutes later, she called back to share the equally shocking news that their mother, Michele Singer Reiner, was also gone, as he detailed in a post on April 24th.

He went on to say that his life had completely fallen apart. He felt numb and lost, and the only thing on his mind was getting back to his family home, to his sister, and understanding what had just occurred.

And the awful realities continued to unfold.

I still can’t believe it. Just hours after they found Rob and Michele… gone… his own brother, Nick Reiner, was arrested! It’s just… awful. And to think, he comes from such a family – his sister Tracy Reiner is from Rob’s marriage to Penny Marshall! It’s all so messed up. He pleaded not guilty, of course, at the arraignment on February 23rd, to two counts of first-degree murder. They’re saying it was a multiple murder situation… I just… I don’t understand how anyone could do something like that.

Jake explained that many people have told him they’re at a loss for words, and he understands why. He admitted that if he wasn’t personally going through such a difficult time, he wouldn’t know what to say either, as the situation is very unique and upsetting.

The aspiring actor, writer, and producer shared that they lost more than half of their family in a horrific event that night. While losing a parent is always incredibly painful, he explained that losing both parents simultaneously was especially devastating, particularly because his brother was involved.

On April 29th, Nick’s legal proceedings will move forward. He has been held in jail without bail since his arrest and is currently being represented by public defender Kimberly Greene, after his previous lawyer, Alan Jackson, withdrew from the case. At an upcoming preliminary hearing, a date will be set for a trial hearing to determine if there is enough evidence to proceed with a trial.

As the process unfolds, learn more about the unbelievably tragic case.

Long before Rob and Michele Singer Reiner sadly passed away, their son, Nick Reiner, spoke openly about his own struggles with addiction. He even worked with his father on the 2015 film Being Charlie, which explored the topic of substance abuse.

Nick explained that he had been to rehab 18 times before turning 30.

In a 2016 interview with People magazine, he shared that he had experienced homelessness in three different states: Maine, New Jersey, and Texas. He described spending nights and weeks living on the streets, calling it a difficult time.

Two years later, Nick recalled an instance when he “wrecked” his home while high on drugs.

He described an incident from 2018 on the Dopey podcast, explaining that he spent ten rounds sparring in his guest house while heavily influenced by stimulants—likely cocaine and another drug. This kept him awake for days, and he ended up damaging things by punching them.

According to sources who spoke with The New York Times, Nick was under a court-ordered mental health conservatorship from 2020 to 2021. A Los Angeles Superior Court clerk verified that the conservatorship concluded in 2021.

Steven Baer, the court-appointed conservator and a licensed fiduciary, told the New York Times that mental illness is a widespread and often misunderstood issue, calling the situation a “horrible tragedy.” He did not offer any further details.

According to multiple sources at Conan O’Brien’s Christmas party on December 13, 2025, the director of When Harry Met Sally had a significant argument with his 32-year-old son. Friends of the family later confirmed the fight to the L.A. Times, adding that guests observed the son behaving oddly during the holiday celebration.

According to two people familiar with the event, Nick was causing a disturbance at the party by interrupting people’s conversations.

On December 14th, around 3:40 p.m., the Los Angeles Police Department investigated a death at a home in Brentwood, California, following a call they received the day after a Christmas party.

According to a statement from the LAPD, officers found two people inside the home who were later identified as Robert and Michele Reiner.

Detectives in the Robbery-Homicide Division’s Homicide Special Section began investigating how the deaths occurred.

According to NBC News, Deputy Police Chief Alan Hamilton stated that investigators will be speaking with many family members. Rob Reiner and his wife have three children: Nick, Romy, and Jake. Rob also adopted the daughter of his late ex-wife, Penny Marshall, named Tracy Reiner.

Rob and Michele did not die from natural causes; they appeared to have been stabbed, according to a source with the Reiner family who spoke to NBC News.

I couldn’t believe it when I read the police statement. They officially said it – the Reiners were murdered. Just…murdered. It felt like a nightmare. All those rumors, all my fears…confirmed. I’ve been following their story for years, and to hear it laid out like that, officially…it just broke my heart. They used the word ‘homicide,’ so clinical and cold, but it meant someone took them. It’s awful.

Around 9 p.m. on December 14th, while the police were investigating, Nick was caught on camera buying a Gatorade at an ARCO gas station near USC in downtown Los Angeles. According to footage obtained by MS Now, he was wearing a green jacket, jeans, and a ballcap, and carrying a red backpack.

Minutes later, the screenwriter was taken into custody near USC.

The Los Angeles Police Department stated their investigation revealed that Rob and Michele’s son caused their deaths.

Oh my gosh, they finally got him! I saw the police statement – they said they found Nick Reiner and arrested him around 9:15 last night. And get this – he’s officially been charged with murder! As of December 15th, he’s locked up, and they’re not even considering bail. I can’t believe it, he’s actually behind bars where he belongs!

On December 16th, as authorities prepared to publicly charge Nick at a Los Angeles courthouse, his lawyer informed the press that he hadn’t been given medical approval to attend the court hearing.

According to reports, officials stated that all inmates require medical approval before being taken to court. They are optimistic that the individual in question will receive this clearance tomorrow, allowing him to be brought in.

On December 16th, Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman announced that his office will charge Nick with two counts of first-degree murder, and will also pursue a special circumstance allegation due to multiple deaths.

The District Attorney also stated that Nick will be charged with an additional allegation: personally using a deadly weapon – a knife – during the attack on his parents.

He explained that if convicted, the maximum punishment could be life in prison with no chance of release, or even the death penalty.

Nick was formally charged Dec. 16.
