It’s a common trope for superheroes to learn they have a secret child, and a Justice League member recently found out he’s a father in an unexpected way. Instead of discovering a child from a past relationship, this one appeared due to a change in the character’s established backstory.
Superhero stories often blend elements of dramatic personal lives with fantastical adventures, much like soap operas and science fiction. Because of this, it’s common for heroes to discover long-lost children through extraordinary circumstances, rather than from past relationships. This recently happened to a member of the Justice League, who was shocked to learn that the son he believed he’d lost years ago is actually alive.
Who is the latest Justice League member to become a dad?
The surprising developments were shown in issue #6 of Mr. Terrific: Year One, created by Al Letson, Valentine De Landro, and Edwin Galmon. The comic book series featured two separate storylines: one revisited how Michael Holt first became a superhero, and the other followed him in the present day as he investigated a mysterious energy source connected to Darkseid.
The two storylines converged when it was revealed that Netherlight, Mr. Terrific’s original supervillain foe, gained her abilities from the New Gods of Apokolips. Furthermore, Michael Holt learned the tragic truth about his wife’s death: it wasn’t a random accident, but a deliberate act by Granny Goodness, who also stole their unborn child.
This moment referenced a story from The Flash #799, published in 2023. In that story, Mister Terrific and other Justice League members fought Granny Goodness and saved children she had kidnapped and turned into soldiers for Darkseid.
Mr. Terrific was shocked to discover one of the children was actually his son, Jeffrey. He initially dismissed the information his T-Sphere sensors were showing him. Though Jeffrey later made a brief appearance in the ‘Jay Garrick: The Flash’ comic series, the story of how he survived his mother’s death remained a mystery – until now.
In the final issue of Mr. Terrific: Year One, Jeffrey Holt, now known as Fairplay, comes to his father’s rescue after a fight with Netherlight. The story ends by revealing that Michael Holt has been sharing his life story with his son, and the two of them visit Michael’s wife’s grave together for the first time.
