Despite launching during a golden age for survival horror games, Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly (2003) became a favorite among fans. Directors Makoto Shibata and Hidehiko Nakajima recently told GamesRadar that the game’s remake for today’s players is largely thanks to continued fan demand.
Fans repeatedly asked us to remake Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly, which is why we chose this game,” the developers explained. They had recently remastered Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse (originally released in Japan in 2008) and Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water (a 2014 Wii U game).
Honestly, a big reason I got into this project was hearing what players wanted. We really focused on making the main characters, Mio and Mayu, feel right, especially their designs and outfits. We put a lot of thought into how they looked!
The costumes were created to stay true to the original look and feel of the game, but with a modern sensibility – we wanted them to be believable as everyday clothing. We focused heavily on details like texture and fabric quality, and players can get a close look at everything in Photo Mode.
For the first time since its original release on PlayStation 2 and Xbox in 2003 and 2004, the survival horror game Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake will be available on current gaming systems. It’s launching on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2 on March 12th. The release date was initially revealed in November with a trailer.
Last month, Koei Tecmo and Team Ninja revealed a demo for Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake will be available on all platforms starting March 5th. Details about the demo are limited, but it will let players experience the beginning of the game. It’s currently unclear if any progress made in the demo will transfer to the full game. In related news, the companies are partnering with Konami to include costumes inspired by Hinako Shimizu, the main character from Silent Hill f.
We also saw a detailed new trailer for Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake, showcasing how the gameplay works. It highlighted the unique “combat” system, which centers around using the Camera Obscura, and explained how players can use special camera shots to gain advantages – like stunning ghosts or dealing extra damage.
The remake of Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly will be significantly improved over the original. Players can expect updated graphics, more modern gameplay, and new features. One of these new features, “Holding Hands With Mayu,” lets Mio heal herself by holding hands with her sister during the game’s scary moments.
