Sony is likely to hold a new “State of Play” presentation in the next few weeks, continuing a tradition of about seven years. These showcases, typically happening in May or early June, are known for featuring major game announcements and generally create a lot of buzz.
With major gaming events like Summer Game Fest and the Xbox Games Showcase just around the corner, we’re starting to think about what people would like to see in a PlayStation State of Play livestream in May 2026.
What Could PlayStation Studios Have to Offer?
PlayStation’s own game developers have several projects in the works that could be featured in an upcoming State of Play presentation. Insomniac Games is expected to reveal more details about Marvel’s Wolverine soon, including gameplay footage and potentially pre-order information and details about a special Collector’s Edition, before its planned release in September 2026.
Marvel vs. Capcom: Fighting Souls will probably announce a few more playable characters, and then we’ll likely see more about Intergalactic. Since the new Naughty Dog game isn’t expected until 2027, it’s unlikely we’ll get any new details in an update around mid-2026. However, if Sony wants to generate a lot of excitement, releasing a second trailer for Intergalactic would be a great way to do it.
In addition, Fairgames will have to be shown off at some point.
State of Play events are well-known for revealing brand new games from PlayStation Studios. The big question is, which studio will be the one to unveil something new?
There’s a strong possibility Santa Monica Studio is working on a new God of War game starring Faye, and this could be announced in their upcoming livestream. Beyond that, other PlayStation studios like Media Molecule, Firesprite, and teamLFG might also have games ready to be revealed.
Will Third-Parties Bring Much to the Table?
Game developers planning releases in 2026 are likely discussing how to avoid launching their games around the same time as GTA 6 in November. While GTA 6 itself probably won’t be featured at the upcoming State of Play event, we anticipate many developers will announce release dates strategically scheduled to avoid competing with it.
Several highly anticipated third-party games, including Control Resonant, Onimusha: Way of the Sword, Fable, the original Halo, Kena: Scars of Kosmora, Silent Hill: Townfall, and Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, are currently scheduled to release in 2026. We expect many of these games to have their official release dates confirmed during the upcoming State of Play event.
Sony is expected to let other game companies reveal new games during their online event, but predicting exactly what those games will be is nearly impossible given how many developers are out there.
We can probably expect to see a few new projects from smaller developers, alongside some exciting independent games. Perhaps we’ll get a version of Mewgenics for the PS5, or an update on the console release of Slay the Spire 2?
Could There Be PS6 News?
Rumors suggest Sony is aiming to release the PlayStation 6 in 2027. With the year halfway over, we might soon start hearing official news about the new console. Microsoft is already talking about its next Xbox, known as Project Helix.
Although it’s something viewers might now expect to hear on a PlayStation livestream, it’s still probably too soon for Sony to discuss the next PlayStation console – especially during a standard State of Play presentation. Sony usually announces new hardware separately from its regular livestreams; for example, the PS5 was revealed in its own dedicated PlayStation Showcase event.
Don’t expect to see or hear anything about the PS6 at the upcoming State of Play event. While a new console is planned for release around 2027, it’s unlikely to be mentioned this month.
In about six months, Sony might begin to publicly announce details about the PlayStation 6.
