Sometimes, a truly great work needs to be kept exactly as it was first created, even if newer versions become more popular. Square Enix clearly feels this way, as they’ve just released an enhanced version of the original Final Fantasy 7 for computers through Steam and GOG.
If you already own the original game, this updated version is a free upgrade. However, it’s currently the only version available for purchase. The original game is now called Final Fantasy 7 – 2013 Edition, and you won’t be able to use your saved progress from that version in the new one.
Okay, so I heard it’s a bit of a downer if you were in the middle of a playthrough and wanted to keep going, but honestly, if you’re starting fresh, this is awesome! You can speed up almost everything – traveling, battles, even certain events – by three times the normal speed. That’s going to save so much time, especially with the option to turn off random encounters while exploring. And if you do get into a battle, you can even set it to constantly restore your HP and MP! It’s a really fast way to revisit a game I already have a lot of great memories of.
If this is your first time playing, it’s best to use the default settings and enjoy the game as the creators designed it. However you choose to play, though, you’ll likely find it very engaging and time-consuming.
