Final Fantasy Fans’ Fears About Its Newest Game Are Completely Justified

It’s been a while since a brand-new Final Fantasy game came out. After Final Fantasy 16 in 2023, players have been enjoying Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth and anticipating the final game in that series. Many are now hoping to hear about the next main Final Fantasy title, though there’s been no news yet about Final Fantasy 17. While a new installment seems likely eventually, Square Enix recently announced a spin-off called Dissidia Duellum Final Fantasy. However, fans are understandably cautious about it.

The new game, Dissidia Deullum Final Fantasy, was recently announced, and the response from fans hasn’t been very positive. It’s the latest in the Dissidia Final Fantasy series, which brings together characters from different Final Fantasy games. However, while the original Dissidia Final Fantasy was popular on the PSP, many fans are disappointed to see another mobile game from Square Enix, and their concerns are likely valid.

Dissidia Duellum Final Fantasy Looks Like a Gacha, But It Has a Bigger Problem

Dissidia Duellum Final Fantasy is coming to iOS and Android in 2026 as a free-to-play game. Although Square Enix hasn’t confirmed how the game will make money, it will likely use a ‘gacha’ system where players collect characters. The game will feature 3v3 battles where players control legendary heroes from the Final Fantasy series and compete against other teams.

The first trailer gives us a glimpse of the game’s core features, like character portraits and fully voiced dialogue. The graphics are surprisingly good for a mobile game, but some fans are worried about the redesigned characters. Since the game is set in the present day, many beloved Final Fantasy characters will have updated costumes based on their classic designs – and that’s where the game’s collectible character system comes into play.

Players anticipate the game will use a ‘gacha’ system – where you randomly ‘pull’ for new characters – like other mobile Dissidia Final Fantasy games. The first trailer suggests this is likely, as it showed both starting characters and those coming later. The game could also offer alternate character costumes for purchase, providing another way to generate revenue.

Gacha games – games where you collect characters or items through a chance-based system – have a dedicated fanbase, but many gamers actively avoid them. New gacha games on Steam often receive negative reviews simply because of how they make money. This is a challenge for Dissidia Duellum Final Fantasy right from the beginning, but players also have other concerns about the game.

Square Enix’s Track Record with Mobile Games Doesn’t Show Promising Future for Its New Final Fantasy Game

Even if you enjoy gacha games, Square Enix hasn’t had much success with its mobile games. They recently cancelled their Kingdom Hearts mobile game before anyone could play it, and this is a recurring issue for the company’s mobile titles.

Square Enix has a history of discontinuing its mobile games fairly quickly. Several Final Fantasy titles haven’t lasted long, including Dissidia Final Fantasy Opera Omnia, a gacha game that launched globally in 2018 and was shut down in 2024. Other games met similar fates: the episodic RPG Mobius Final Fantasy was discontinued in 2020 after launching in 2016, and Final Fantasy Brave Exvius ended service in 2024.

Square Enix is known for making free mobile games that eventually stop being updated. While five or six years is a decent run for a mobile game, players often hesitate to spend money on them, especially on in-game items obtained through chance (‘gacha’), because they worry the game will be shut down soon. This creates a difficult cycle: these games need players to spend money to stay alive, but players don’t want to spend money on a game they fear won’t be around for long.

I think Dissidia Duellum Final Fantasy could be a really enjoyable game. It seems to play a lot like the team battles in Marvel Mystic Mayhem, which I liked a lot. However, Final Fantasy fans are understandably concerned it might not be supported for very long, given the track record of past Final Fantasy mobile games.
