A new trailer from HBO has given us our first look at Season 3 of House of the Dragon. While the Game of Thrones universe is expanding with the upcoming spinoff, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms (premiering January 2026), House of the Dragon will return later in 2026, likely in the summer. Season 2 received mixed reactions, even drawing criticism from author George R.R. Martin regarding some of the show’s creative decisions, so Season 3 aims to regain viewers’ favor.
A first look at House of the Dragon Season 3 appeared in a larger trailer from HBO Max, highlighting 17 upcoming and returning shows and docuseries set to premiere in 2026. Because the Game of Thrones spin-off remains incredibly popular, it’s given a key spot in the trailer, appearing both at the beginning and again later on.
The new trailer stands out because it features several battles. Many fans felt Season 2 didn’t have enough action, but it looks like the upcoming conflict between the Targaryens will finally deliver on that front. This includes the Battle of the Gullet, a large naval battle with the Velaryons, which was originally planned for last season but delayed. We also get our first glimpse of James Norton playing Lord Ormund Hightower, Otto Hightower’s nephew and the head of House Hightower.
