Playground Games has always focused on making its open-world games feel unique, and with Forza Horizon 6, they wanted to make the experience even more personal. This is clear with features like The Estate, where players can build and customize their own home base in an empty valley, and the new Collection Journal.
Taking inspiration from Japan’s tradition of collecting stamps, the game encourages players to gather keepsakes from all over the game world. According to design director Torben Ellert, the team aimed for a distinctly Japanese experience with a clear sense of progress. Discovering interesting locations adds entries to your in-game journal and helps you climb the ranks at the Horizon Festival and advance your overall progress in Japan.
You can also personalize it with photos of the places you visited. “It’s a way to visually show your trip and collect your unique experiences in Japan,” Ellert explained.
The game also features companions who join your character – a tourist eager to experience Japan’s Horizon Festival. You’ll travel with Jordy, a huge motorsports fan, and Mei, a skilled Japanese car builder who provides valuable local knowledge. Mei’s character was inspired by Kyoko Yamashita, a cultural consultant who helped the game developers during their research trips to Japan.
As Ellert points out, our team’s trip to Japan highlighted the incredible value of having a local guide. Even with thorough research, a visitor can benefit from someone who truly understands the culture and nuances of the place. This insider’s perspective is crucial when trying to authentically recreate a setting or experience. Ultimately, learning from someone who grew up in the country adds a personal and genuine touch.
The latest installment, Forza Horizon 6, launches on May 19th for Xbox Series X/S and PC. PlayStation 5 players will be able to enjoy the game later in 2024. Those who purchase the Premium Edition will gain early access on May 15th, plus receive two future expansions.
