Gen V All But Confirms the Biggest Cipher Theory & It Sets Up Homelander’s Defeat (But at a Cost)

The biggest mystery in *The Boys* universe since the exploding head incident is now Cipher. In *Gen V*, the dean of Godolkin University says he’s training students for a revolution that likely won’t happen, but that seems to be a cover. He’s hiding his true intentions, which involve Marie Moreau – he ensured she was given Compound V before she was born. Cipher continued the work of Thomas Godolkin with Project Odessa, and now that Marie is under his supervision again, he’s prepared to finish her training and use her to accomplish his aims.

Marie is struggling to adjust to her new job because she’s focused on finding her sister and returning to a normal life. Desperate to escape her situation, she asks her friends to investigate Cipher, starting with the elderly man who lives at his house. Finally, the show *Gen V* revealed the identity of the mysterious burned figure and explained how they could alter the future, not just for themselves, but for the characters in *The Boys* as well.

Cipher Has More Connections to God U Than Just His Job

In Season 2, Episode 5 of *Gen V*, Cipher dramatically punishes Marie, Jordan, Emma, and Cate by sending them to Elmira. A conversation with Sister Sage hints that Cipher believes Marie is key to saving the world – a surprising goal for someone in education. However, Cipher doesn’t get a chance to explain, as the group escapes with Sam Riordan’s help in Episode 6, leaving him in a difficult position. He then seeks out Polarity, controls him to find Marie, and dispatches his enforcer, Vikor, to bring her back. This plan works well until Zoe Neuman intervenes, killing Vikor and allowing the group, along with former Vought CEO Stan Edgar, to escape.

Edgar is determined to take down Vought and believes Marie, a key figure from his past, is the way to do it. After meeting with his contacts, he learns about Cipher’s location, which reminds him of an old rumor from his early days at Vought – that Godolkin might still be alive. If Cipher is hiding Godolkin, recovering him could be crucial to dismantling Vought and defeating Homelander, as Godolkin possesses vital knowledge about controlling and neutralizing Supes. However, Edgar doesn’t know Godolkin’s current mental state or whether he’s actually the one in charge of Cipher.

Thomas Godolkin Could Be the Greater of Two Evils

Ever since his release from prison, Edgar has been working tirelessly. He picked up his granddaughter from the Red River Institute and started gathering everything he could find about Godolkin’s work. His ultimate goal is to reclaim control of Vought and finally defeat Homelander, and he believes Marie is the right person to help him do it. However, Edgar realizes he doesn’t know enough about Supes himself and thinks bringing Godolkin on board could be a huge advantage. What he doesn’t realize is a dangerous possibility: Godolkin might actually be Cipher.

While training with her dean, Marie couldn’t detect any Compound V in his system, making her suspect he wasn’t a Supe. Investigating this further backfired when he overpowered Jordan during their fight. Though the others readily believed he was a Supe after that, he might be concealing something. Edgar mentioned Godolkin’s expertise in controlling Supes, suggesting he’s found a way to do so without physical contact. If this is true, Marie and the others could be walking into a carefully laid trap. Godolkin might even manipulate them into eliminating Homelander, clearing the path for his own long-awaited ascent to power.
