A new anime reboot of Ghost in the Shell is coming this summer, and the person leading the project recently shared their thoughts on it. Ghost in the Shell is a well-known science fiction anime that many fans have enjoyed over the years. Interestingly, each new adaptation – whether a remake or sequel – has been quite different, often sparking debate among longtime fans of the original.
A new anime series based on Ghost in the Shell will premiere in July, created by the studio Science SARU, known for popular shows like DAN DA DAN and Scott Pilgrim Takes Off. Considering the many different versions of the anime over the years, the original creator, Masamune Shirow, has explained how fans should view this latest installment: he calls it the “first part of a second generation.”
Ghost in the Shell Creator Explains New Anime
According to creator Masamune Shirow, this new anime version of Ghost in the Shell is the fourth major adaptation, following previous versions directed by Oshii, Kamiyama, and Kise. However, if you count each season and separate film as individual adaptations – including Innocence, the Stand Alone Complex seasons, the ARISE series and film, and the seasons of SAC_2045 – this new version actually becomes the tenth. Shirow points out that despite the many existing adaptations, this latest one is quite different.
Shirow suggested that with the changes in the production team, this could be seen as the start of a new era for the series. He acknowledged the original manga is aging and asked for understanding, but expressed hope that this version will still be visually engaging. So far, this latest adaptation appears to be the most faithful to the character designs and world-building of Shirow’s original manga.
When Does the New Ghost in the Shell Reboot Come Out?

Currently planned for release in July 2026, the new anime adaptation of Ghost in the Shell hasn’t yet announced when it will be available outside of Japan. Bandai Namco Filmworks, Kodansha, and Production I.G. are producing the series, with Moko-chan directing (their first time as anime director) at Science SARU. Toh Enjoe is writing the scripts, Shuhei Handa is the character designer and chief animation director, and Ryo Konishi and Yuki Kanesaka are composing the music.
As Masamune Shirow pointed out, Ghost in the Shell has been adapted into anime ten times already, so this new version faces a big challenge. Recent attempts at rebooting the series have been criticized for their computer-generated animation, and that’s not even mentioning the poorly received Hollywood live-action film. Fans are hoping for an adaptation that stays true to Shirow’s original manga, and this could be the one.
