God of War Laufey Has a Major Red Flag Nobody Is Talking About

The newest God of War game, currently titled God of War Laufey, was recently unveiled by Santa Monica Studios and Sony. This installment will feature Faye, Kratos’s second wife and Atreus’s mother, as the main character, rather than Kratos himself. The game appears visually stunning, clearly benefiting from a substantial budget. While it looks impressive overall, it doesn’t immediately feel like a traditional God of War title, raising the question of what defines the series without Kratos. The developers will need to demonstrate that the franchise can thrive beyond its iconic hero. It remains to be seen if they can succeed, and some potential issues aren’t being discussed.

Jimmie Myers is directing the story for the new God of War game, and Elize Morgan is the lead writer. Neither of them worked on the previous God of War titles, suggesting this game is being developed by a different team. Myers previously directed cinematics at Bungie (2021-2024) and worked in similar roles at Infinity Ward, and he also spent time as a video editor at Naughty Dog. Morgan recently joined Santa Monica Studios after writing for Gotham Knights in 2022, and she also contributed to Watch Dogs: Legion and Assassin’s Creed Origins. Gotham Knights received criticism for its story, which is a potential concern for this new God of War game. The biggest worry, however, is that neither Myers nor Morgan has experience working on a God of War title, despite being the key narrative leads.

God of War Laufey Red Flags

In a YouTube video called “Introducing Faye” – which has received a lot of negative feedback – Morgan and Myers shared that they first encountered the God of War series with the 2018 reboot. However, seven God of War games came before that one. It’s unclear whether they played any of the earlier titles to prepare for their roles, and they haven’t said so. Even if they did, quickly playing through seven games in a short time wouldn’t be the same as experiencing them originally.

You don’t need to be a huge God of War fan to work on the games, and a talented writer or narrative designer could contribute well even with limited knowledge of the series. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s likely. God of War Laufey seems to be adding significant new story elements, and that’s where deep familiarity with the existing lore is really important. While the writers might become experts quickly, that’s probably unrealistic. Considering this is a new project for the writers, and their previous work on Gotham Knights, there are some concerns, especially given the game’s reveal trailer, which feels tonally different. God of War Laufey doesn’t look bad, but it doesn’t really feel like a God of War game – even the creator, David Jaffe, has pointed this out.

When God of War (2018) was first shown, it was clear PlayStation had created something special. The same was true when God of War Ragnarok was revealed – Santa Monica Studio was continuing the high quality of its previous work. However, with God of War Laufey, there’s more uncertainty, and a closer look reveals some concerning issues.
