This connection makes sense considering the series was produced by the Duffer brothers, who were heavily inspired by King’s writing for their previous hit, Stranger Things.
After being available on Netflix for two weeks, The Boroughs continues to be a popular hit, staying in the top 10 most-watched shows. It quickly rose to number one during its first full week, attracting 9.5 million viewers, and had already reached 5.6 million views in its first three days. Now, after ten days, the series has been viewed 15 million times, and strong recommendations are likely to boost those numbers even further. Critics also love the show, giving it a 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and the “Certified Fresh” designation, while viewers have given it an 80% approval rating.
The show is strikingly similar in style to Stranger Things, blending sci-fi and horror, but features a cast of adults instead of teenagers. Despite the industry’s hesitation with older leads, it works wonderfully, thanks to the strong performances from seasoned actors like Alfred Molina, Bill Pullman, Geena Davis, Alfre Woodard, and Clarke Peters. The show is gaining popularity and a second season seems very likely, especially considering the surprising ending of The Boroughs, which hints at a deeper, more complex story.
