Kim Raver and Kevin McKidd, both longtime cast members on Grey’s Anatomy, will be leaving the show after the season 22 finale.
Fan favorites Kim Raver and Kevin McKidd, who play Dr. Teddy Altman and Dr. Owen Hunt, will be leaving the show with the final episode, airing on ABC in the US on May 7th.
For almost twenty years, McKidd and Raver have been key figures on the show, with McKidd starting in season 5 (2008) and Raver joining in season 6 and later becoming a main cast member in 2010. Their characters’ complicated relationship – beginning as Army majors in Iraq and eventually leading to marriage in season 18 – has been a long-lasting and popular part of the series.
Even though Teddy and Owen recently went through a difficult divorce following a try at an open relationship, there’s a possibility they might still find their way back to each other. The show’s creator, Shonda Rhimes, has suggested a happy ending is still in store for them, describing it as both sad and hopeful, and ultimately giving them the conclusion their story deserves.
I’ve heard their leaving was a choice made for the story, and like with other actors on Grey’s, they haven’t completely ruled out coming back someday. It feels like they could reappear if the story allows!

Both actors have also become accomplished directors. McKidd has directed 48 episodes of the show since 2011, and is even directing the upcoming final episode. Raver has directed several episodes since season 19 as well.
Looking back on his years with the show, McKidd shared that Grey’s Anatomy has been a significant part of his life, both professionally and personally. He feels that portraying Dr. Owen Hunt and working as a director on the series have profoundly influenced him.
Raver shared that playing Teddy Altman was a deeply meaningful experience and expressed gratitude for the fans’ continued support over the years.
Showrunner Meg Marinis fondly remembered both actors, highlighting Scott McKidd’s emotional range and dedication over 18 seasons and Kim Raver’s powerful and realistic performance as Teddy. She emphasized that their contributions won’t be forgotten.
Production has now wrapped on season 22, with four episodes still left to air.
You can now watch Grey’s Anatomy on Disney+. A Disney+ subscription starts at just £5.99 per month.
