Harry Potter and Luther favourites star in unnerving first-look trailer at gothic horror Victorian Psycho

The first trailer for the new Gothic horror movie, Victorian Psycho, is out now, just before its debut this afternoon at the Cannes Film Festival.

The movie, currently without a UK release date, features Maika Monroe (known from ‘Reminders of Him’), Thomasin McKenzie (‘Last Night in Soho’), Jason Isaacs (from the ‘Harry Potter’ films), and Ruth Wilson (‘Luther’). It’s adapted from a novel of the same name by Virginia Feito.

Feito wrote the movie’s script, and Zachary Wigon, known for directing films like Sanctuary and The Heart Machine, will direct it.

I just read the plot summary for this new film, and it sounds amazing! Apparently, it’s about a really unusual governess named Winifred, played by Monroe, who shows up at this isolated, creepy old mansion in Victorian England. She seems charming at first, but it quickly becomes clear she’s hiding something dangerous.

As Winifred’s mental state deteriorates, disturbing events escalate, disrupting the peace of the estate with increasingly violent acts. The question becomes: how much further will she go, and who will be left to face her anger?

The trailer offers a glimpse of eerie events and Winifred’s escalating cruelty, beginning with Monroe questioning: “What truly matters – understanding the difference between good and evil?”

She asks, “But what is evil, really? Can it be physically sensed – touched, smelled, or even tasted?”

Throughout the story, disturbing discoveries unfold, like a severed ear found under a bed and eventually a decaying skull, all set to the intense metal track “Throw Yourself to the Sword” by Die Spitz.

Isaacs then examines Winifred and declares, “Just as I suspected, you have an organ of lust.”

Over the past ten years, Monroe has become well-known as a star in horror films, notably appearing in leading roles in movies like It Follows and Longlegs.

I’ve been keeping an eye on this actress lately, and her recent work is really diverse. She’s tackled everything from the emotional drama of Reminders of Him to the fantastical world of 100 Nights of Hero, and even took on a remake of the classic thriller The Hand That Rocks the Cradle. And excitingly, she’s returning for a sequel to It Follows, which I’m definitely looking forward to – that first film was genuinely creepy and I’m eager to see what they do with a follow-up.
