A recent update to Street Fighter 6 suggests Alex is questioning whether Tom is actually his biological father.
Capcom had previously stated they would revise a character’s problematic family history in an upcoming update, and that update is now available. Players can now see the changes for themselves.
Alex initially explained that his adoptive father, Tom, was his mother’s cousin and a friend of his father. This also meant Tom was related to Alex’s future wife, Patricia, as she was Tom’s biological daughter.
The revised wording actually makes the relationship less clear, though it doesn’t completely remove the connection. It now says: “He’s a distant relative of my Mum or something, and used to practice with my Dad.”
Alex suspects Tom might still have a connection with his mother, though he’s not certain. Despite this uncertainty, he marries Patricia and they have a child together.
A recent change now describes Tom as “basically the Dad I needed,” instead of simply stating he is Alex’s father. While it’s always been established that Alex is adopted, this new phrasing subtly creates some distance between them, likely to make his relationship with Patricia seem less strange.
Earlier this year, Capcom added backstory to their website revealing that Alex ran away from home as a young man, seemingly to distance himself from his sister, Patricia. However, the game still features images of Alex holding Patricia as a baby, suggesting a continued connection.
The updates definitely improve things a bit, but Capcom has created a difficult situation for themselves. Unless they completely rework the story, Alex’s actions and motivations will likely still seem problematic.
