Caution: spoilers ahead for The Boys season 5.
Though The Boys and Supernatural seem very different, they actually have a lot in common behind the scenes. Eric Kripke, who created Supernatural, is also the showrunner for The Boys, making it his biggest project since Supernatural. As a result, The Boys often includes references and nods to the world of the Winchester brothers.
Several actors from the show Supernatural have joined Amazon projects, including Jim Beaver (known as Bobby Singer and President Singer) and Alexander Calvert (who played Jack and Rufus). Fans of Supernatural will notice plenty of references and inside jokes. Jim Beaver even reprised his role as a character named Robert Singer and used his famous line “idjit” before his character died in The Boys. The shapeshifting creatures in season four of The Boys were also clearly inspired by the shapeshifters from Supernatural.
It’s always fun to include nods to the show Supernatural, and Jensen Ackles definitely brings that energy as Soldier Boy, especially in Season 5, Episode 3. In this episode, Soldier Boy finally has a proper conversation with Firecracker, and their discussion about guns – barrels, recoil, and smooth operation – is actually a metaphor for something else entirely. Consider yourself warned: there are spoilers ahead!
The Make Of Soldier Boy’s Weapon In The Boys Season 5 Is A Supernatural Easter Egg
Soldier Boy mocks Firecracker for using a Glock made outside the US, and proudly displays his own American-made Colt 1911. This preference for American goods fits Soldier Boy’s character, but it will especially resonate with fans of Supernatural – Jensen Ackles famously wielded a Colt 1911 as Dean Winchester. Throughout Supernatural, the Colt was the most recognizable weapon used by the Winchester brothers to hunt monsters. This specially-made revolver fired magically powerful bullets capable of killing almost any creature, and was used against some of the show’s biggest threats, like the Yellow-Eyed Demon and the Alpha Vampire.
The Colt pistol quickly became the most iconic weapon in Supernatural, so it’s fitting that Jensen Ackles, who played Dean Winchester, wielded another Samuel Colt firearm as Soldier Boy in The Boys. In fact, Dean Winchester himself had a history with the Colt, traveling back to the 1860s to use it and defeat a phoenix, collecting its ashes in the process.
Get Ready For More Supernatural Fan Service In The Boys Season 5
I’m absolutely thrilled to see the connection between The Boys and Supernatural getting even stronger! It was there from the beginning, but I have a feeling we’re going to get a lot more nods to the show as season 5 unfolds. Having Jensen Ackles back is amazing, and now to hear Jared Padalecki and Misha Collins are joining the cast too? Incredible! The thought of all three of them sharing a scene together just gives me chills – I’m bracing myself for some seriously epic, Supernaturalinspired action. Honestly, with those three back on screen together, I wouldn’t be surprised if we see tons of little Supernatural* references popping up before the season ends. It’s going to be fantastic!
Now that The Boys is nearing its end, the show can freely bring in fun guest stars and references to Supernatural without having to consider how those choices might affect the plot later on.
The Boys’ Ending Is Virtually The Opposite To Supernatural
It’s notable how differently The Boys is ending compared to Supernatural, despite both shows being connected to Eric Kripke. After season 5 of Supernatural, Kripke stepped down as showrunner, but the show continued for another ten seasons. With The Boys, Kripke is finishing the series after season 5, giving him full creative control over a planned five-season story arc from beginning to end.
Instead of continuing the story of Homelander and Billy Butcher, Prime Video plans to expand its superhero universe with spin-off shows. While Vought Rising (featuring Jensen Ackles) is the main one in development, a previously discussed The Boys series set in Mexico is still in the works. Eric Kripke has confirmed a pilot episode has been submitted to Amazon for review.
