Ryan Condal confirms House of the Dragon will end after four seasons
Ryan Condal, the creator of House of the Dragon, has revealed the show will conclude after four seasons. He mentioned on the Escape Hatch podcast that they’ve begun writing the fourth and final season. Season 3 finished filming in late October 2025 and is now in the editing phase, with the writing for Season 4 already started.
It wasn’t clear how the show would end. However, in November 2025, HBO’s CEO, Casey Bloys, said the network usually lets the show’s creators decide when it’s time to wrap things up, and they would support whatever decision the creators made. He also noted there were no updates on the show’s future at that time.
Despite strong ratings – Season 2 averaged 25 million viewers per episode according to HBO (The Hollywood Reporter) – Condal decided to end the show after its current season. He explained that knowing this is the last season allows the team to give it their all.
Season two only adapted a portion of the “Dance of the Dragons” story from George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, raising questions about how the rest of the tale will be told in the remaining sixteen episodes across seasons three and four. Key events like the Battle of the Gullet, the battles at Tumbleton, and further conflicts within King’s Landing are still yet to be shown.
Online, fans expressed disappointment and worry about the show’s direction. One fan wrote, “It’s a shame we won’t see a story about Aegon III, Viserys II, and their family – that would have made for great television.”
Someone else commented that they appreciated HBO leaving the possibility of continuing the show beyond four seasons, jokingly referring to Ryan Murphy as the one who typically concludes shows after that point.
