Promotion for House of the Dragon Season 3 is picking up, and HBO has just released a new trailer hinting at what many fans are most excited for: a major confrontation. The Game of Thrones prequel returns next month after a two-year hiatus, and this season will finally dive fully into the Targaryen civil war, known as the Dance of the Dragons. The trailer suggests a lot of intense action, including large-scale battles and impressive dragon scenes.
The next season of House of the Dragon will be crucial for regaining fan support after some changes from the source material were criticized, even by author George R.R. Martin himself. While action will still be a part of the show, it needs to drive the characters’ development and the overall story, a hint of which is visible in the newly released poster for Season 3. The poster features key characters – including Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy), Daemon (Matt Smith), Jacaerys (Harry Collett), Baela (Bethany Antonia), Rhaena (Phoebe Campbell), Corlys (Steve Toussaint), Aegon (Tom Glynn-Carney), Helaena (Phia Saban), Alicent (Olivia Cooke), and Aemond (Ewan Mitchell) – gathered around the Iron Throne. You can see it below.

The poster is really well-done, cleverly using images and quotes from the show, specifically the famous phrase “Win or Die.” It also hints at important events that will happen later in the series. Be careful, though – reading further will reveal major spoilers from the book Fire & Blood, which the show is based on.
House Of The Dragon Season 3’s Poster Teases Aemond Vs. Daemon & More Character Moments

What really struck me about the poster was how Aemond and Daemon were placed – right at the top, flanking Rhaenyra. It totally fits, considering they both have incredibly powerful dragons and are key leaders and fighters who will definitely influence how the war goes. But the most powerful detail is their intense stare – they’re locked eyes, weapons drawn, and completely ready to clash. You can just feel the tension between them!
Fans have been anticipating a confrontation between Aemond and Daemon ever since the release of Fire & Blood in 2018. The book depicts a dramatic battle between them – known as the Battle Above the Gods Eye – where they fight on their dragons, Vhagar and Caraxes. The show established their rivalry in Season 1 with a tense standoff, and hinted at future conflict. In Season 2, Aemond openly welcomed the challenge, while Alys Rivers warned Daemon he would meet his end at Harrenhal, a location near the Gods Eye lake.
While a major showdown isn’t expected in Season 3 – there’s still a lot of story to cover, and HBO likely wants these key characters available for the finale – it’s currently planned for Season 4, which is scheduled to arrive in 2028. However, the show is definitely hinting at this conflict, and we’ll see groundwork laid for it throughout the upcoming third season.
Beyond the anticipated showdown between Aemond and Daemon, the new poster offers some interesting clues. Rhaenyra isn’t shown sitting on the Iron Throne, which is significant because, in the books, the throne symbolically rejects her claim. We also see Aegon positioned at the bottom, seemingly trying to climb back up, hinting at his weakened position after the events of Season 2. He was badly burned, forced to escape, and temporarily lost his place on the throne to Aemond.
Helaena stands out as the only character who avoids looking at the throne and the brewing conflict, suggesting she wants nothing to do with it—a detail that mirrors her eventual suicide in the book, where she falls onto spikes. Alicent focuses solely on protecting Helaena, a connection established in the season two finale of House of the Dragon. Jacaerys reaches for his mother, possibly foreshadowing his death at the Battle of the Gullet, while Corlys prepares for battle, watching Rhaenyra with suspicion. Baela and Rhaena remain close, hinting that they might survive the coming conflict.
There’s a lot going on in that poster, but it’s well done. Knowing the show’s history of hinting at future events, it’s likely everything was put there on purpose. It’s an exciting little preview, but we’re eagerly awaiting the show’s return.
House of the Dragon Season 3 premieres on June 21st on HBO and HBO Max.
