Fans can expect more of the action they’re hoping for in House of the Dragon Season 3. While the Game of Thrones prequel has been mostly well-received over its first two seasons, it hasn’t been without criticism. Author George R.R. Martin publicly voiced concerns about changes made from his book, Fire & Blood, and how those changes could negatively impact the story. These alterations, along with the show’s speed of storytelling, have also divided viewers. After a lot of groundwork, Season 2 ended with the threat of war looming, but didn’t actually show the war beginning.
Season three will mark the true start of the Targaryen civil war – a conflict previously hinted at in season two. This time, the story will move much faster and feature more action. Ewan Mitchell, who plays Aemond Targaryen, told Entertainment Weekly it will be “All-out war. It’s just a blitz straight out of the gate.” Emma D’Arcy (Rhaenyra Targaryen) shared a similar sentiment in the same interview.
This season of the show kicks off with a fast pace and the long-awaited war that’s been brewing for two seasons is finally here. I’m really impressed with Ryan and the team for skillfully building this conflict, which started as personal and familial issues, and then escalating it to impact the entire world. It’s a really well-crafted storyline.
House Of The Dragon Season 3’s War Promise Is Exciting, But It Must Be Balanced

The new season will pick up right where the last one ended – with the massive Battle of the Gullet. This naval conflict, intended for the end of Season 2, has been moved to the beginning of Season 3 and promises to be the largest and most brutal sea battle in Westeros history. According to showrunner Ryan Condal, the episode featuring this battle will be an incredibly ambitious undertaking, potentially “the craziest episode of television ever made,” and involved extensive sets, both on land and water, to create a truly epic visual spectacle.
Many fans will likely be happy to hear this, as the second season received mixed reactions due to its focus on things like Daemon Targaryen’s visions and a relative lack of war. This approach makes sense because the show is currently planned to end after four seasons (confirmed by the showrunner to Entertainment Weekly, though HBO hasn’t officially announced it), and there’s a lot of story and many battles still to cover before then.
The show also needs to strike a good balance. While it’s heading towards becoming a large-scale war and action story – complete with dragons – it’s crucial that the characters remain well-developed. Game of Thrones wasn’t just visually impressive; its success stemmed from its compelling characters and meaningful themes, which were built over many seasons through thoughtful storytelling. These characters are the core of the franchise, and House of the Dragon still needs to focus on them. Action sequences are exciting, but without a connection to the characters, they can feel hollow.
While the first two seasons laid some groundwork, Season 3 still has a lot to establish regarding character development. Specifically, the show needs to carefully explore the changes in Rhaenyra, who is increasingly becoming power-hungry and developing a sense of invincibility – the actress describes it as almost religious zeal. As the central character, her descent needs to be handled thoughtfully and at a measured pace. The rushed storytelling of the final season of Game of Thrones demonstrated the risks of speeding through a Targaryen queen’s arc.
The upcoming battles promise to be amazing, and the actors are sure to deliver, but the show really needs to develop its characters well. Luckily, it seems like everything is in place for that to happen. Plus, focusing on action and dragons is a smart move for attracting viewers. Either way, the third season of House of the Dragon is looking fantastic, and we won’t have to wait much longer to see what happens.
House of the Dragon Season 3 premieres on HBO and HBO Max on June 21st.
