Star Trek Reveals New Details About Upcoming TV Episode That’s a Wild Franchise First After 60 Years

Star Trek is venturing into completely new territory with an upcoming episode that producer Alex Kurtzman says was the most challenging they’ve ever created. This episode will introduce a format never before seen in the Star Trek universe—and that’s notable, considering the show has experimented with nearly every type of special or event episode since its debut in 1966.

Okay, so Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is coming back for a fourth season this summer on Paramount+, and things are already getting… interesting. During filming, a picture dropped online of Captain Pike – Anson Mount, looking fantastic as always – but he was a Muppet! Yes, a full-on puppet. Now, we’re finally getting some details on how the show is going to address this wonderfully bizarre development. Trust me, it’s going to be a trip!

Star Trek’s First Puppet Episode Was A Major Undertaking

Alex Kurtzman has been the creative force behind many Star Trek episodes since the launch of the streaming series in the early 2020s. However, he says the recent puppet-based episode of Strange New Worlds was the most challenging they’ve created. According to Kurtzman, it required significantly more effort than the animated episode, the musical episode, or even episodes heavily reliant on visual effects, demanding extensive preparation, long shooting days, and a substantial amount of post-production work.

Details about the plot of the upcoming puppet-themed episode are mostly secret, but showrunners Kurtzman and Goldsman have revealed that Captain Pike will be involved in a shocking transporter accident, leaving him transformed into a puppet-like figure. It’s unclear if other characters will face similar fates. The impressive puppet work was created by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop, with Jordan Canning, known for directing Fraggle Rock: Back to the Rock, directing the episode. Goldsman says the Henson team was thrilled to contribute to the Star Trek universe.

According to Goldsman, working on Star Trek is usually a dream come true. People aren’t typically assigned to the show – they actively seek it out. He’s found this to be especially true for those directly involved in creating the series, and he describes their passion as deeply moving and meaningful.

I’m so excited! Season 4 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is hitting screens on July 23rd! And get this – there’s a puppet episode coming on August 20th! If you want to chat about where the show is headed and all things Star Trek, come join the discussion over on the ComicBook Forum!
