Christian Siriano knows he has to be one step ahead for the Met Gala 2026.
Before the Met Gala, a designer known for creating unique outfits for stars like Janelle Monae, Lizzo, and Bebe Rexha, revealed what goes into getting ready for fashion’s biggest event at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute fundraiser.
Christian recently shared with TopMob News at the Fashion Scholarship Fund’s annual gala that he received a very last-minute request to create a dress for the Met. He said, ‘I literally just got a text asking if I could do it while I was driving! Of course, I said yes, but it was really short notice.’
The winner of Project Runway, who is appearing on the Live From TopMob: Met Gala panel with Ciara Miller, Justin Sylvester, Keltie Knight, Zanna Roberts Rassi, Renee Montgomery and Chris Appleton—shared that creating an outfit for the yearly event can be “really frustrating.” She explained that it’s often the sheer number of details that make it so challenging.
You know, I hear that all the time! People spend so much energy meticulously planning things – trips, parties, even just a dinner out – and then something always seems to shift. It’s incredibly frustrating when everyone changes their mind, isn’t it? I’ve learned that flexibility is key – you can have a general idea, but being able to roll with the punches and adapt is what really makes things successful (and less stressful!).
The 40-year-old also shared a funny story about last year’s event: Lizzo unexpectedly changed the color of her dress right before she was about to go on stage.
“Lizzo was like, ‘I want to wear white,’” he explained, “and we had made her an all-black look.”
The fashion designer wasn’t surprised by the addition of the white details in the final design, simply stating, “These things happen.”
As Christian Dior himself noted, great things often come from pressure, and he considered one of his most beloved creations to be the custom, Picasso-inspired pop-art gown he designed for Janelle at the 2019 Met Ball – complete with matching eye accessories.

He explained that her prosthetic eye was open for the entire twelve-hour period, and it had been displayed in around five museums.
Christian has hinted that he and his partner might outdo their memorable “Camp: Notes on Fashion” dress at the 2026 Met Gala, which will be hosted by Anna Wintour, Venus Williams, Nicole Kidman, and Beyoncé.
Christian announced on Instagram in May that their annual designs would be returning soon, teasing that this year’s collaboration with Janelle Monáe is going to be amazing!
Everyone is eager to see how the couple will interpret this year’s “Fashion Is Art” theme at the Met Gala. For now, let’s take a look back at some of the most memorable outfits from Met Galas past…

Kim Kardashian made a huge impression at the 2021 Met Gala with a surprising all-black outfit that completely covered her face. The custom look was created by designer Demna Gvasalia, who is the creative director of Balenciaga. Interestingly, Kim actually couldn’t see through the outfit!
During a November 2021 interview, Kris Jenner explained that Kim had trouble seeing and breathing throughout the Met Ball. Her boyfriend, Corey Gamble, stepped in to help, guiding Kim around and even fixing her ponytail. He was essentially both her guide and her hairstylist for the night.

Lil Nas X truly delivered a show-stopping entrance at the 2021 Met Gala, changing outfits not once, but twice! One look, a stunning gold Versace suit resembling armor, was particularly memorable and continues to impress.

Rihanna is consistently praised for her innovative style, but her appearance at the 2021 Met Gala with boyfriend A$AP Rocky really excited her fans. Their arrival as one of the final couples of the night was a showstopper, and they completely captivated the red carpet with their sweet and charming entrance.

In 1996, Princess Diana made her one and only appearance at the Met Gala, just a year before her tragic death. Her dress, a navy satin slip inspired by lingerie, caused some controversy – some people thought it wasn’t modest enough. She’d even considered wearing something different, worried it might embarrass her teenage son, Prince William. However, the dress, designed by John Galliano for Dior, quickly became a legendary fashion moment.
As of 2024, Princess of Wales and Princess Beatrice are the only British royals who have gone to the Met Gala. However, many expect Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to attend in the future.

As a lifestyle expert, let me tell you, whenever Rihanna steps onto the Met Gala carpet, it’s always a moment. Honestly, she consistently delivers iconic looks and it’s impossible not to be completely captivated – she truly reigns supreme at that event!

The 2014 Met Gala is remembered for a now-famous elevator incident involving Beyoncé, Jay-Z, and Solange Knowles. Security footage leaked, showing Solange physically attacking Jay-Z while Beyoncé stood by. The usually private family quickly released a statement confirming they were still united, addressing the widespread public interest in the event.
We may never know the full story, but Beyoncé seemed to reference the incident in a remix of her song “Flawless,” rapping, “When you have a billion dollars on an elevator, things can sometimes go wrong.”

Fans remember Taylor Swift and Tom Hiddleston’s relationship starting at the 2016 Met Gala, where they danced together a lot. Shortly after, Swift ended her relationship with Calvin Harris and quickly began a fast-moving summer romance with Hiddleston.

George and Amal Clooney first attended the Met Gala together as a married couple in 2015. Amal later returned in 2018 to help host the event as a co-chair.

Only a week after Beyoncé released her album Lemonade – which hinted at problems in her marriage to Jay-Z – she attended the 2016 event without him, causing a huge reaction from her fans. Luckily, she wasn’t alone, as her sister Solange was there to support her, and notably wore a lemon-yellow outfit.

Kim Kardashian will always remember her first Met Gala in 2013. She arrived with Kanye West wearing a striking floral dress by Givenchy. A month later, she gave birth to her daughter, North West. Two years after that, Kim jokingly re-wore the same dress for Halloween, sharing a photo online with the caption, “Still fits…”

In 2006, Sarah Jessica Parker and the late Alexander McQueen made a bold fashion statement at the Met Gala, both wearing matching tartan outfits to honor the “AngloMania” exhibit, which explored British fashion’s history of tradition and rebellion.

Everyone knows a picture can speak volumes, and this one is especially telling. It shows designer Jeremy Scott between his dates to the 2016 Met Gala, Nicki Minaj and Demi Lovato. After Demi Lovato publicly suggested Nicki Minaj had been subtly critical of her on Instagram, she hinted at the uncomfortable night in a Billboard interview, revealing things hadn’t gone as planned two years earlier.
She remembered in 2018 having a really bad experience with a certain celebrity, describing them as unpleasant and difficult to be around. She also said the environment felt very exclusive and unwelcoming.

Anna Wintour famously tried to keep everything that happened at the Met Gala private – she even banned selfies in 2015! It’s a glamorous event, but not a red carpet free-for-all like the Oscars.
Two years later, Kylie Jenner and her friends secretly took a photo together in the bathroom. It was a memorable moment – a classic picture that will likely be remembered for years to come, even if it wasn’t taken with a Kodak camera.

In 2018, Madonna delivered a stunning performance of “Like a Prayer” as she descended the stairs of the Great Hall. She also sang Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah.” The performance perfectly matched the event’s theme that year, “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination,” and felt like a true stairway to heaven.

Bella Hadid turned heads at the 2017 Met Gala with a striking outfit, and skillfully avoided an uncomfortable encounter with her ex, The Weeknd, and his then-girlfriend, Selena Gomez. According to a source, she stayed away from them all night. Interestingly, Bella and The Weeknd later got back together, but their relationship didn’t last and they eventually split up again.

Jaden Smith is known for his bold fashion choices, and he first gained attention for this at the 2017 Met Gala when he carried his recently cut dreadlocks as an accessory. This unexpected move became something of a signature for the artist, and in 2018, he brought his gold-certified plaque for the song “Icon” as his companion to the event.

Claire Danes made a stunning entrance at the 2016 Met Gala wearing a light blue ball gown that looked like something a modern Disney princess might wear. The dress, designed by Zac Posen, was actually covered in thousands of tiny L.E.D. lights that lit up the dance floor as she moved.

Lady Gaga completely understood and mastered the “Camp: Notes on Fashion” theme at the 2019 Met Gala. Her arrival in a huge, pink Brandon Maxwell gown was just the first part of a stunning performance. She revealed multiple outfits, layer by layer, eventually performing in glamorous lingerie that brought the crowd to its feet.
