Tommy Hilfiger Teases “Big Surprises” at Met Gala 2026

The 2026 Met Gala is sure to be a work of art.

With the Met Gala approaching on May 4th, and stars like Beyonce, Nicole Kidman, and Venus Williams getting ready to walk the red carpet, Tommy Hilfiger has given a preview of what attendees can anticipate.

As he recently teased to TopMob News, there will be “big surprises.”

The Met Gala’s “Costume Art” theme and “Fashion Is Art” dress code led to some very revealing looks. Stylist Law Roach is a good example of someone who noticed this.

He shared with TopMob in March that he loves seeing people’s creative takes on the theme, and ‘Fashion as Art’ is open to many interpretations. He predicted someone might even dress up as the Mona Lisa – a likely possibility, he added.

Besides all the excitement of the event itself, it’s really stressful trying to find an outfit that will make a statement on the Met Gala steps.

He explained that despite months of dedicated effort, the actual performance or event lasts only a few minutes. It’s incredibly stressful because all that hard work culminates in a very brief moment, and then it’s over.

According to Andrew Bolton, curator of the Costume Institute, the exhibition—running from May 10th to January 10th at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City—will focus on how clothing relates to the human body.

As a lifestyle expert, I’ve been thinking a lot about how we present ourselves, and this museum exhibit really nails it. The core idea, the ‘aha’ moment for the curator, is that what we wear – or even don’t wear – always tells a story. It’s woven into every single piece on display. You’ll notice that even when the exhibit features nude figures, they aren’t simply ‘naked.’ They’re always presented with cultural meaning, reflecting the values and ideas of the time. It’s a fascinating exploration of how we use clothing and even the human form to express who we are.

While stylists like Hilfiger and Roach concentrate on creating stylish looks for their clients, Anna Wintour has been handling the more practical details, like figuring out who sits where. As she explained, a significant amount of her time is spent on “a lot of seating charts.”

With celebrities getting ready for the red carpet, here’s a look back at some of the most unforgettable moments from the Met Gala.

Kim Kardashian made a huge impression at the 2021 Met Gala with her unexpected all-black outfit that completely covered her face. The custom look was created by designer Demna Gvasalia, who is the creative director of Balenciaga. Surprisingly, Kim couldn’t actually see through the outfit!

During a November 2021 interview, Kris Jenner shared that Kim had trouble seeing and breathing throughout the Met Ball. Her boyfriend, Corey Gamble, stepped in to help, guiding Kim around and even fixing her ponytail. He was essentially both an escort and a hairstylist for her at the event.

Lil Nas X truly delivered a show-stopping entrance at the 2021 Met Gala, changing outfits not once, but twice! One look, a stunning gold Versace suit resembling armor, was particularly memorable and continues to impress.

Rihanna is consistently praised for her innovative style, but her appearance at the 2021 Met Gala with boyfriend A$AP Rocky caused a huge reaction from her fans. Their arrival as one of the last couples of the night was a showstopper, and they completely captivated everyone on the red carpet.

In 1996, Princess Diana made her one and only appearance at the Met Gala, just a year before her tragic death. Her dress, inspired by lingerie, caused some debate, with some people believing it wasn’t modest enough. She’d even considered wearing something different, worried about potentially embarrassing her teenage son, Prince William. However, the navy satin slip dress—created by John Galliano for Dior—quickly became a legendary fashion moment.

As of 2024, Princess of Wales and Princess Beatrice are the only British royals who have gone to the Met Gala. However, many expect Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to attend in the future.

Let me tell you, every single time Rihanna steps onto the Met Gala steps, it’s an instant iconic moment. Honestly, I’m completely obsessed and always in awe – she just consistently delivers unforgettable looks and I’m here for it!

The 2014 Met Gala became famous for an incident involving Beyoncé, Jay-Z, and Solange Knowles. Security footage leaked, showing Solange physically attacking Jay-Z in an elevator at The Standard Hotel in New York City. Beyoncé didn’t intervene, and the usually private family quickly released a statement confirming they were still a close-knit unit, addressing the widespread public interest in the situation.

We may never know the full story, but Beyoncé seemed to reference the incident in a remix of her song “Flawless,” rapping, “When a billion dollars is at stake, things can sometimes escalate.”

Fans remember Taylor Swift and Tom Hiddleston first hitting it off at the 2016 Met Gala, where they danced together a lot. Shortly after, Swift ended her relationship with Calvin Harris and quickly began a fast-moving summer romance with Hiddleston.

George and Amal Clooney first attended the Met Gala together as a married couple in 2015. Amal later returned in 2018 to help host the event as a co-chair.

Only a week after Beyoncé released her album Lemonade – which hinted at problems in her marriage to Jay-Z – she attended the 2016 party without him, causing a huge reaction from her fans. Luckily, she wasn’t completely alone, as her sister Solange was there with her, and playfully wore a lemon-yellow outfit.

Kim Kardashian will always remember her first Met Gala in 2013. She arrived with Kanye West wearing a striking floral gown by Givenchy. A month later, she gave birth to her daughter, North West. Two years after that, Kim jokingly re-wore the same dress for Halloween, sharing a photo with the caption, “Still fits…”

In 2006, Sarah Jessica Parker and the late Alexander McQueen made a bold fashion statement at the Met Gala. They both wore matching tartan outfits to celebrate the “AngloMania” exhibit, which explored the history of British fashion.

Everyone knows a picture can speak volumes, and this one of Jeremy Scott with his Met Gala dates, Nicki Minaj and Demi Lovato, is especially noteworthy. After Demi Lovato suggested Nicki Minaj had subtly insulted her on Instagram, she hinted at the uncomfortable situation in an interview with Billboard, revealing details about a disappointing night she experienced two years earlier.

She remembered in 2018 having a really bad experience with a certain celebrity, describing them as unpleasant and difficult to be around. She also said the environment felt very exclusive and unwelcoming.

Anna Wintour famously tried to keep everything that happened at the Met Gala private – she even banned selfies back in 2015! It’s a glamorous event, but not a red carpet free-for-all like the Oscars.

You know, I’ve seen a lot of candid moments in my time, but this one always makes me smile. It was taken about two years ago – Kylie Jenner and her friends just casually hanging out in the bathroom and someone snapped a quick photo. It’s one of those perfectly imperfect shots that really captures a moment, and honestly, it’s a classic even if it wasn’t actually taken with a Kodak camera!

In 2018, Madonna delivered a stunning performance of “Like a Prayer” as she descended the stairs of the Great Hall. She also sang Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah.” The performance perfectly matched the event’s theme that year, “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination,” and felt like a true stairway to heaven.

Bella Hadid turned heads at the 2017 Met Gala in a striking outfit, skillfully avoiding a potentially uncomfortable encounter with her ex-boyfriend, The Weeknd, and his date, Selena Gomez. According to a source, Hadid stayed away from the couple all night. Interestingly, Bella and The Weeknd later got back together, but their relationship didn’t last and they eventually split up again.

Jaden Smith is known for his bold fashion choices, and he first turned heads at the 2017 Met Gala by carrying his newly cut dreadlocks as an accessory. This daring move became something of a signature for the artist, and in 2018, he took an even more unconventional ‘date’ to the event: the gold plaque celebrating his hit song, “Icon.”

I was absolutely captivated when Claire Danes arrived at the 2016 Met Gala! She looked like a modern, tech-loving Disney princess in this gorgeous, light blue ball gown. What really blew everyone away – and me! – was that the dress was covered in thousands of tiny L.E.D. lights, all hand-sewn! It actually lit up the dance floor as she moved – it was magical! Zac Posen really outdid himself with that creation.

Lady Gaga truly understood the ‘Camp: Notes on Fashion’ theme at the 2019 Met Gala. She made a grand entrance in a huge, pink gown designed by Brandon Maxwell, but that was just the first layer. In a show-stopping performance, she dramatically revealed multiple outfits underneath, eventually arriving in glamorous lingerie that left the audience amazed.
