How Lamar Odom Felt After Khloe Kardashian’s Comments About His Dad

Lamar Odom didn’t take Khloe Kardashian’s words lightly.

Following Kim Kardashian’s criticism of Lamar Odom for minimizing her involvement after his overdose, a source close to Odom clarified what he actually said. The source also disputed Kardashian’s claim that his father, Joe Odom, was prepared to remove him from life support before she got to the hospital.

According to a source, comments about Lamar Odom’s father were very upsetting to him. The source, speaking to TopMob News on April 15th, said that the claims made in the documentary Untold: The Death & Life of Lamar Odom—specifically, the idea that his father would have prioritized money—didn’t reflect the truth and deeply affected Odom personally.

Since the documentary came out on March 31st, the ex-couple – who divorced in 2016 – have been talking about his dangerous overdose in 2015 at a Nevada brothel, and their recollections have sparked a lot of disagreement.

On April 6th, Lamar Odom, 46, suggested in an interview on Today With Jenna & Sheinelle that Khloe Kardashian had overstated how much she helped care for him after his health emergency. This led Khloe to publicly accuse him of calling her a liar during the April 15th episode of her podcast, Khloe in Wonder Land.

According to a source, Lamar knew Khloe had been supportive during his health issues, especially since she put their divorce on hold while he recovered.

According to a source, Lamar didn’t accuse Khloé of being dishonest, and he acknowledged her involvement. His statement about being saved by God reflects his own faith, and isn’t meant to downplay the medical treatment or support he received.

“Doctors saved his life; Khloé was there for him,” they added, “and he has acknowledged both.”

In fact, that’s a point he has long emphasized.

According to a source close to him, he’s always been grateful for Khloé’s support during a really difficult time in his life. He’s often shared that she was there for him, helped him through it, and was a key part of his healing process.

TopMob News has reached out to a rep for Khloe but has not heard back.

Khloe didn’t hesitate to share her honest opinion about how he remembered things.

Khloe Malika Haqq explained on her podcast on April 15th that it’s frustrating when people assume she enjoys constantly discussing painful experiences. She emphasized that revisiting these difficult memories is traumatic and that she doesn’t simply want to talk about unpleasant parts of her life.

Ugh, honestly, I’m so frustrated! I thought everything was finally over. I’d moved on, I was done with all things Lamar, seriously! I told myself, ‘No more!’ I was finally at peace. But now he’s out there doing interviews and, like, making it about me again? It’s infuriating! I just want to be left alone after everything I’ve been through.

She didn’t need Lamar to thank her for what happened, but she also didn’t expect him to dismiss or undermine her.

She added that she didn’t need anyone to compliment her, but she wouldn’t tolerate being criticized or treated disrespectfully just because people didn’t like how things were going or the public’s reaction.

Khloe and Lamar first met in 2009 at a party Khloe hosted. The party was thrown by Lamar’s Los Angeles Lakers teammate, Ron Artest, who later changed his name to Metta World Peace.

Khloe admitted in the Netflix documentary Untold: The Death & Life of Lamar Odom that she hadn’t met Lamar Odom before the party where they first connected. She explained she likely took the job because her brother, Rob Kardashian, a huge Lakers fan, was really enthusiastic about it.

Lamar, recently crowned a champion with the Lakers, revealed in the documentary that he also didn’t recognize Khloe initially. He confessed that he was immediately attracted to her, saying, ‘To be honest, my first night, I was trying to hook up with her.’ However, she made it clear she wasn’t interested in that kind of encounter. They connected the following day, and that quickly led to a continuing relationship.

Just weeks after meeting, he proposed with a nine-carat diamond ring. They married on September 27, 2009, only a month after their first encounter.

I consider myself a pretty rational person,” Khloe shared. “But I get why people were skeptical and questioning if our relationship was genuine. We were planning a wedding in just 30 days – that’s really fast!”

As Lamar put it, “You gotta have a gut feeling” and “some big balls.”

Lamar and his ex-fiancée, Liza Morales, have two children together: a daughter named Destiny Odom and a son, Lamar “L.J.” Odom Jr. They were high school sweethearts in Queens, New York, but their relationship ended after the tragic loss of their 6-month-old son, Jayden, who passed away from sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) on June 29, 2006.

In her memoir, Untold, Liza wrote that when Lamar texted her to say he was marrying Khloe, her first thought was that he must be kidding.

Lamar explained in his statement that people attempted to discourage him from getting married. He also said the mother of his children prevented their attendance at his wedding.

L.J. later enjoyed receiving Christmas presents from Khloe and her mother, Kris Jenner. However, at the time, he admitted he hadn’t even met Kris and didn’t think his father had told him he was marrying her, as he shared in the documentary.

Destiny, who is 27, explained in the document that if someone wants a big wedding with lots of guests and cameras, that’s perfectly fine and their choice.

The reality show Khloe & Lamar first aired on April 10, 2011, on TopMob. It felt like a logical extension of Keeping Up With the Kardashians, which had already led to other spin-offs like Khloe & Kourtney Take Miami and Kourtney & Kim Take New York.

But that was not Khloe’s idea, according to the now 41-year-old.

According to the documentary, the show Khloe & Lamar was heavily influenced by Lamar. Khloe felt overwhelmed trying to balance everything and was also worried about damaging the family’s reputation, as Keeping Up With the Kardashians was already successful. She questioned whether a second show was a good idea and reminded Lamar to focus on his basketball career with the Lakers, asking him if he was certain he wanted to proceed.

Khloé explained that filming Keeping Up With The Kardashians let her move around and avoid constant public attention. She was initially a bit worried about a new show being filmed in their home constantly, but she also wanted to support her partner, who was very enthusiastic about the idea.

Destiny said of her dad, “He did love Khloe, but he’d wanted to be on reality TV for a long time.”

As Lamar explained in the document, he agreed to participate if he could also benefit, stating, ‘If I’m going to marry you, I want a share of everything.’

Liza remembered in the documentary that after the Lakers won their second consecutive NBA championship in 2010, her children skipped school to go to the celebratory parade in downtown Los Angeles.

When they arrived at his home, they received a call saying their father wasn’t responding, even though they knew he was inside.

“We were knocking on the door and there was nothing,” Destiny said, “it was just silence.”

Liza mentioned that Lamar’s friend called, explaining he wasn’t feeling up to attending the parade after a night out and didn’t want his kids to see him that way. Although he was hesitant, his trainer insisted he participate, and ultimately, his children watched him from home on television.

Liza shared that they were heartbroken. Destiny explained that being rejected by a parent is incredibly painful and can really hinder a child’s growth, creating memories that last a lifetime. She also revealed that she now understands he was struggling with partying and substance use at the time.

Khloe admitted that, surprisingly, Lamar’s early cocaine use seemed handled responsibly, according to the documentary.

I remember it was about two years into their relationship, sometime in June, when he just vanished. Honestly, I was really worried something terrible had happened to him.

Khloe explained that he was struggling because June is the month of Jayden’s death anniversary. She added that it was then she realized, “This is completely new territory for me – a really difficult situation, and I don’t know how to handle it.”

Lamar, who is now 46, explained in the documentary that he likely has many forgotten stories from that period of his life, due to his circumstances at the time.

He wondered aloud how someone could even contemplate cheating on their wife. He questioned how anyone could plan a televised wedding and then be unfaithful.

Khloe remembered the night she found out Lamar was being unfaithful. She’d had her suspicions, but this was the first concrete evidence. A woman called and bluntly told her, “I’ve been having an affair with your husband. He’s a mess, constantly asking for money and drugs, and I want out. Can you come get him?”

Khloe remembered that Lamar would sometimes leave rehab – whether for a few hours or a couple of days – and immediately use drugs again. She often found herself desperately searching for him in rundown places like alleys and cheap motels. He’d leave drug paraphernalia – things like cut-up aluminum foil and spoons – scattered around wherever he went.

She explained she constantly had to tidy hotel rooms after him to prevent hotel staff from sharing details with the media. She admitted she didn’t realize she was helping him at the time, but felt a strong obligation to keep everything secret and protect him.

Lamar’s drug use became extremely heavy after he was traded to the Dallas Mavericks in December 2011, according to her.

The following summer, Lamar was traded back to the L.A. Clippers, the team that originally drafted him in 1999.

Following the end of the 2012-2013 season, he relapsed into drug use, and it became very serious, Khloe explained. He overdosed multiple times, and she had to help him through it privately, even performing stomach pumping at home. They tried everything they could to help him detox.

Khloe told Lamar he had a choice: get three months of rehab, or she would file for divorce. An interventionist advised her to deliver this ultimatum.

Khloe remembered people telling her he would never admit he wanted a divorce. During an intervention, after she spoke, he surprisingly said he just wanted his passport and then agreed to move forward with the divorce, using strong language.

Lamar recalled that right after finalizing his divorce in 2015, he instantly wanted to use drugs, but realized he didn’t have any cocaine.

Living in Las Vegas at the time, he ended up at the Love Ranch, a legal brothel in Crystal, Nev.

Lamar pointed out how amazing it is to consider that even a small choice can have a huge impact, not just on your own life, but on the lives of those you care about most.

I remember being so shocked when I heard about Lamar being found unconscious at the Love Ranch back on October 13, 2015. The sheriff said he’d apparently been using cocaine in the days leading up to it, and had taken a shocking amount – ten doses – of some kind of drug to help with sexual performance since he got there. It was really scary news.

Before the release of Untold, Lamar explained to Sports Illustrated that although drugs were found in his system later, he hadn’t yet established a source for cocaine in Las Vegas and hadn’t used any that day or night.

In an interview with USA Today, he firmly denied bringing cocaine to the brothel, explaining he was upset after signing divorce papers. He’d imagined going to the brothel and using cocaine as a way to cope, but that didn’t happen.

Khloe said she simply screamed when her sister, Kim Kardashian, told her that Lamar had overdosed.

When Khloe arrived at the hospital, she learned that Lamar’s father, Joe Odom, who passed away in 2021, was prepared to remove him from life support. Khloe questioned this, reminding Joe she was still legally married to Lamar and asking what he needed. Joe requested a pair of Nike shoes, $100, and a hotel room for the night. After receiving those items, he left and never returned.

Khloe explained that she was determined to do whatever it took to give him the best possible chance in the fight. She added that she ultimately relied on her own judgment more than anyone else involved.

She restricted visits, requiring her permission for anyone who wanted to come over.

I was absolutely devastated when I heard about Lamar. He was immediately flown from Vegas to Cedars-Sinai in L.A., and honestly, Khloe was incredible. As she shared in her series, Untold, she barely left his side. She was there, with him, every single day for around four months – it was truly amazing to witness her dedication.

When Lamar finally got out of the hospital in 2016, I was so relieved! And Khloe? She was incredible. She actually rented a house right near hers so she could keep an eye on him, and she hired people to be there with him around the clock, making sure he was okay. It was just… amazing how much she did for him, even after everything. I was glued to the updates, honestly.

Okay, so in the documentary, Khloe was talking about this insane moment. She walked in, and she immediately smelled it – this awful, unmistakable smell of crack. Apparently, Lamar was in the bedroom smoking it, and she just lost it. She said she didn’t even think, she just straight-up punched him! I mean, can you blame her? It was so shocking to hear her talk about it, but honestly, it makes so much sense why she did what she did. It’s just…wow. I’ve rewatched that part like a million times.

She explained that he’d gotten a phone and seemed to be doing surprisingly well, but she realized he was manipulating her to keep supporting him. She told him, ‘You need to move out by Monday. I won’t pay for anything else, and I don’t want to ever talk to you again.’

When Lamar and Khloe reunited in late 2024 after nine years apart, he told her he didn’t recall the events of the past, but also acknowledged that doesn’t mean they didn’t happen.

He used strong language to express his anger that someone had offered him cocaine, especially considering his recent experiences.

“I can depend on my family,” he reflected, “but most people leave you to f–king rot in the wind.”
