“If Tyrion Was So Smart…”Peter Dinklage Reveals His Biggest Game Of Thrones Filming Issue

One of the most intelligent characters from the popular fantasy show shared something he disliked about making the series, and he didn’t hold back when explaining it.

Like many actors from Game of Thrones, Peter Dinklage will likely always be remembered for his work on the show. He’s best known for playing Tyrion Lannister, a clever advisor who served several rulers in the world of Westeros. Throughout the series, Tyrion travels extensively – from Winterfell and the Wall to King’s Landing and across the sea to Essos – which meant filming in a wide range of environments.

Speaking with Variety, Peter Dinklage recounted how uncomfortable the costumes could be while filming with Kit Harington. He jokingly complained about the heavy cloak and the hot Spanish weather, wondering aloud, ‘If Tyrion is so intelligent, why would he wear such heavy clothing in 100-degree heat?’

Harington brought up the cooling vests the cast used on set – vests with tubes and a place to plug in an ice pack – which Dinklage had initially refused. “I said ‘no thank you’ for about a week,” Dinklage explained. “I wanted to really feel it, to suffer. But eventually, I changed my mind. Everyone else was getting too comfortable and falling asleep, so I realized I needed one too.”

Peter Dinklage and Kit Harington recently shared memories of their time filming Game of Thrones, discussing what they did right after season 8 finished, and whether their children will ever watch the show. They also talked about their current and upcoming projects. Harington has already returned to HBO with a role in Industry, and has appeared in How to Train Your Dragon 2 and Eternals as well.

Since the conclusion of Game of Thrones, Peter Dinklage has taken on several prominent roles. He joined the Hunger Games franchise with The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, voiced Dr. Dillamond in the animated hit Wicked, and appeared in Roofman and The Lowdown. He’s also slated to star in Olivia Coleman’s upcoming fantasy comedy Wicker and will return for the second season of Alien: Earth.

Peter Dinklage shared that his son is a big fan of Alien: Earth, which was a major reason he accepted the role. He joked that his son warned him not to ruin his favorite show, fearing it would spoil the experience for him. Dinklage realized he’d be introducing a bit of reality into his son’s enjoyment of the series. The actor also mentioned he hasn’t been thrilled with the fantasy roles he’s been offered since 2019.

I believe my role as Tyrion helped change how people saw characters like mine. In fantasy, those characters often aren’t fully developed. But after Game of Thrones finished, the roles I was offered reverted to the typical, less complex fantasy characters. The cast knew while filming that Game of Thrones would be a hugely important show, although its impact has been complicated since it ended.

The world of Game of Thrones is growing with new shows like House of the Dragon, which starts its third season this month, and the upcoming second season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. However, these projects wouldn’t be possible without the hard work and commitment of the original cast and crew, who faced tough shooting conditions and invested deeply in the story.

Kit Harington shared that playing Jon Snow was often difficult, saying he approached much of his work on Game of Thrones while struggling emotionally. He believes the character himself contributed to this. He also noted that Peter Dinklage, as Tyrion Lannister, brought both comedy and deep emotional weight to the show.

All episodes of Game of Thrones are available to stream on HBO Max.
