The story of Homelander, the incredibly powerful superhero from *The Boys*, has been unexpectedly altered by a recent reveal in the series *Gen V*. Antony Starr, who plays Homelander and leads Vought International’s superhero team, the Seven, appeared in the first season finale of *Gen V*. While we believed we understood his difficult and disturbing past, season 2 of *Gen V* has dramatically changed things.
Season 2 of *Gen V* uncovered a secret project by Godolkin University’s founder, Thomas Godolkin, called “Odessa.” This involved injecting Compound V into embryos at a very early stage of development. Godolkin’s goal was to create exceptionally powerful superpowered individuals, but only two embryos survived: Marie Moreau and, surprisingly, Homelander. This revelation dramatically alters Homelander’s established backstory in *The Boys*, and actually clashes with what we already know about his family history and the character’s origins.
Why Gen V’s Project Odessa Doesn’t Make Sense For Homelander’s Origins

The fact that Homelander was part of Project Odessa implies Vought doubted he’d even *have* superpowers. However, season 3 of *The Boys* showed us Homelander is actually Soldier Boy’s biological son. Since powers are usually inherited in the world of *The Boys*, and Vought specifically chose Soldier Boy as the father to guarantee Homelander’s abilities, Project Odessa doesn’t quite fit with what we know of his origins.
Throughout *The Boys*, many superheroes inherit their powers from their parents. For example, Ryan gained abilities like his father, Homelander, while Andre Anderson and Maverick both got their powers from their fathers, Polarity and Translucent, respectively. Given this pattern, it seems strange that Vought would also inject Soldier Boy’s embryo with Compound V, especially at such an early stage of development.
Season 4 of *The Boys* showed just how disturbing Homelander’s upbringing in the Vought lab was, making it clear he was never destined to be a true hero. With the reveal of Project Odessa, his link to Marie Moreau is now obvious, potentially setting up a massive showdown between the two strongest Supes – maybe on *Gen V* or back on *The Boys*. While it would be helpful to have Homelander’s origins fully explained, it’s doubtful we’ll ever get a complete answer about where he came from.
