A recent leak suggests that Injustice 3 is officially in development. After finishing Mortal Kombat 1 last year, fans began wondering what NetherRealm Studios would work on next. NetherRealm’s Ed Boon revealed in 2024 that they’d been laying the groundwork for a new project since 2021, and while he didn’t say what it was then, it now appears to be Injustice 3.
According to a report from MP1st, an artist working at WB Games has revealed they’re contributing to a new Injustice game – specifically, Injustice 3. The artist, who remains anonymous, also mentioned work on a sequel to Hogwarts Legacy, a project WB Games had previously expressed interest in. The mention of Injustice 3 is particularly noteworthy, as NetherRealm Studios hadn’t officially announced their next game yet.
It wasn’t surprising to hear that NetherRealm Studios is returning to the Injustice series. Before Mortal Kombat 1, the studio consistently alternated between making new Mortal Kombat and Injustice games, a pattern they followed from 2013 to 2019. Ed Boon, the studio head, has also stated he has many ideas for Injustice 3, suggesting they always planned to eventually create another installment.

If this information is accurate, it points to a possible release of Injustice 3 around 2027. Considering the four-year gap between Mortal Kombat 11 and Mortal Kombat 1, we can expect a similar timeframe between MK1 and NetherRealm’s next project. This means that if Injustice 3 is in development, we might get an official announcement from NetherRealm before the end of the year.
Beyond video games, NetherRealm Studios is about to get a lot of attention thanks to the new Mortal Kombat 2 movie. The film, a sequel to the 2021 Mortal Kombat reboot, comes out next week on May 8th, and will even include a brief appearance by Ed Boon, one of the creators of the game series.
