As a big fan of the Insidious films, I was really intrigued by the new trailer for Insidious: Out of the Further. It looks like they’re doing something different this time around! After Insidious: The Red Door last year, which nicely concluded the Lambert family’s story, this next movie will follow a brand new character. Luckily, Lin Shaye is returning – you just can’t have Insidious without her! It’s great to see the franchise continuing with a fresh perspective while still bringing back a familiar face for more ghostly battles.
The latest installment in the horror series centers around Gemma, a mother played by Amelia Eve, and her daughter, played by Island Austin. As shown in the trailer released by Sony Pictures, Gemma has raised her daughter alone since birth, and they’ve recently moved back to Gemma’s childhood home. After a terrifying experience, Gemma realizes she has the ability to enter the ‘Further,’ the series’ supernatural dimension. Luckily, a friend helps her connect with the spirit of Elise (from previous films), who mentors Gemma in controlling her new power. What makes Gemma unique – even compared to the talented Elise – is her ability to permanently pull spirits from the Further into the real world.
The creative team behind the original Insidious films – James Wan and Leigh Whannell – are producing the new sequel, along with Jason Blum and Oren Peli. Jacob Chase, who directed the 2020 horror movie Come Play, is directing this installment, and he co-wrote the script with David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, a writer who has worked on the Conjuring series since its second film. Ty Simpkins and Lin Shaye return to lead the cast, joined by Maisie Richardson-Sellers (known from DC’s Legends of Tomorrow), Laura Gordon (Late Night with the Devil), Brandon Perea (Twisters), and Sam Spruell (A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms).
Now that Insidious: The Red Door has concluded the story of the Lambert family—which began the whole Insidious series—Insidious: Out of the Further seems to be starting a new chapter while still honoring what fans enjoy. Though Lin Shaye’s character died in the original film, she’s remained a key connection throughout the series, appearing in earlier stories and even as a spirit in later sequels that focused on new characters. Out of the Further is aiming to do the same—provide that connection—but instead of telling a prequel story, it’s moving beyond the Lambert family’s experiences.
As a huge fan of the Insidious series, I’m really excited about what Eve’s powers could bring to the next chapter. It’s always been about understanding and avoiding the dangers of the Further, but now, Eve doesn’t just react to the evil spirits – she seems to have some control over them, which is something we’ve never seen before! It opens up so many possibilities for a truly fresh and terrifying story. I can’t wait to see it all unfold when Insidious: Out of the Further comes out on August 21st. Hopefully, this next film will be a huge success and kick off a whole new wave of stories within this universe – I’m already hoping for more!
