James Cameron Got Studio Pushback for Wanting To Make Avatar 3

James Cameron explained that creating Avatar 3 wasn’t easy. The studio initially disagreed with his decision to divide the planned sequel into two movies, which ultimately changed the direction of the Avatar series and led to the earlier development of a third film.

James Cameron received pushback from studio after deciding to split Avatar 2 and 3

James Cameron revealed to Discussing Film that the studio wasn’t thrilled when he decided to expand the planned Avatar sequels from three to four. After the massive success of the first Avatar in 2009, Cameron assembled a team of writers to develop a story for a trilogy. However, as the project progressed, the plan changed.

Originally, we had three scripts in development, but that quickly grew to four. Two of those scripts ended up being divided into two and three separate stories,” he said. “What started as the third movie in the series actually evolved into both The Way of Water and a future film called Fire and Ash. This change meant the movie that was planned as the fourth installment is now the fifth, bringing the total number of films in the franchise to five.

Cameron explained that the studio initially resisted the change, but he quickly challenged their concerns. He pointed out that they had the opportunity to potentially earn another $2 billion, questioning what part of that was problematic.

James Cameron’s success with the Avatar films is well-deserved. The original Avatar remains the highest-grossing movie ever made, earning $2.9 billion, and the sequel, The Way of Water, brought in $2.3 billion globally in 2022. Now, the upcoming Avatar 3 aims to continue this winning streak by surpassing $2 billion in box office revenue when it’s released this month.

James Cameron has begun filming scenes for Avatar 4, but the future of that movie – and the possibility of making Avatar 5 – relies on how well Avatar 3 does when it comes out in theaters on December 19th.
