Before James Gunn became co-head of DC Studios and the leader of the new DC Universe, he already worked on DC projects, directing The Suicide Squad and creating the first season of Peacemaker. Some parts of those earlier projects continued into the second season of Peacemaker (which now takes place in the DCU, not the older DCEU). This has led to confusion about what stories are officially part of the new DC Universe timeline. While Peacemaker Season 2 playfully addressed this, it hasn’t fully clarified everything. Now, as fans discuss what’s considered official DCU canon, James Gunn has shared his thoughts.
James Gunn participated in a conversation on Threads about whether elements from the Suicide Squad movies and Blue Beetle could become part of the new DC Universe (DCU) timeline. A fan asked if a scene of Bloodsport shooting Superman with a kryptonite bullet would fit, referencing the opening of the Superman film which showed Kal-El having just lost his first fight. Gunn explained why that idea wouldn’t quite work.
He questioned whether being unexpectedly attacked from a distance should be considered a loss in a fight. He used the example of Abraham Lincoln, arguing that Lincoln didn’t ‘lose a fight’ to John Wilkes Booth, despite being assassinated.
Will The DCU Ever Address Bloodsport’s History With Superman?

In The Suicide Squad, Amanda Waller briefly explains that Bloodsport landed Superman in the hospital by shooting him with a kryptonite bullet. The movie doesn’t show how that happened, and it was originally just a way to establish Bloodsport as a highly skilled and dangerous shooter. However, with the new DC Universe being developed, fans are now debating whether this event is officially part of the DC story. James Gunn hasn’t confirmed it, but his comments suggest it’s possible. He points out that Superman wouldn’t have been much of a challenge if Bloodsport had secretly tracked and shot him from afar.
Bloodsport is officially part of the DC Universe, having been involved in the same mission to Corto Maltese as Peacemaker and Rick Flag Jr. However, we don’t know much about his past. While Peacemaker’s story is similar in both versions of the universe, this DCU’s Bloodsport might have been imprisoned for a different reason and has no connection to Superman. Since the DCU’s Superman didn’t become public until three years before the events in James Gunn’s Superman movie, it’s possible he wasn’t even active as a hero when Robert DuBois (Bloodsport) went to prison, depending on when Project Starfish happened.
Season 2 of Peacemaker picks up a few years after the events of the first season, and after Superman’s story has unfolded. This timing could mean the events of Project Starfish happened before the world knew about Superman. However, James Gunn deliberately made the time jump somewhat vague – “a couple of years” – because he understands how tricky it is to keep timelines consistent across interconnected universes. A major goal for the new DC Universe is to avoid requiring viewers to do a lot of research to understand what’s happening, so Gunn wants to give filmmakers flexibility. This approach allows for adjustments later if needed, while still remaining logical.
It’ll be fascinating to see how James Gunn and his team handle the connection between Bloodsport and Superman in future DC Universe projects. Gunn has indicated he’s planning to include Bloodsport in something down the line, which suggests they might explore his history more fully. Given Superman’s central role in the DCU, it would seem strange if Bloodsport returned without acknowledging their shared past. Gunn has hinted on social media that he might address inconsistencies from previous DC films once he finishes working on Man of Tomorrow, providing clarity for fans.
