In a recent development, filmmaker James Gunn has hinted at the potential comeback of a beloved character from last year’s movie “The Suicide Squad”. As the joint head of the DC Universe (DCU), Gunn helmed and wrote the film, which although part of the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), received critical praise but fell short in box office earnings.
James Gunn wants to bring Idris Elba’s Bloodsport into DCU
In a recent conversation with Entertainment Weekly, director James Gunn mentioned his enthusiasm for incorporating Idris Elba’s Bloodsport character into the DC Universe, stating, “I’m always on the lookout for where Bloodsport fits best, and I’m working on figuring that out.” So, stay tuned to find out what transpires.
As a devoted cinema enthusiast, I must admit that I was thrilled to witness Idris Elba’s debut as Robert DuBois, also known as Bloodsport, in this year’s The Suicide Squad. Interestingly enough, Elba stepped into the role originally played by Will Smith in the 2016 Suicide Squad, with Smith portraying Floyd Lawton, aka Deadshot. According to reliable sources like The Hollywood Reporter, Elba was brought on board as a replacement for Smith, following his decision to step away from the DC Universe.
Despite The Suicide Squad’s underwhelming performance at the box office, it’s heartening to see that a substantial portion of the DC fanbase has been eagerly awaiting Elba’s entrance into the DCU. Intriguingly, this could pave the way for more exciting stories involving Bloodsport and his fellow antiheroes in the years to come.
In the realm of DC Comics, Idris Elba’s portrayal of Bloodsport is part of the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). However, his character can also appear in the wider DC Universe (DCU) through the HBO Max series “Peacemaker,” which serves to link these two franchises. In an interview with Variety in 2022, Elba expressed his desire to reprise the role: “I’d definitely be interested in telling the Superman story. It’s a certainty, I believe.” The actor continued, expressing his enthusiasm for a potential showdown between Bloodsport and Superman, stating, “It needs to happen.
In The Suicide Squad movie, it seems the character who won the Golden Globe brought up the reason behind Bloodsport’s imprisonment. Apparently, he fired a Kryptonite bullet at Superman, which resulted in him being sentenced to prison.
In the DC Comics universe, the character Bloodsport as portrayed by Robert DuBois was introduced in the fourth issue of volume 2 of Superman, which hit stands in 1987. The creator behind this character was both writer and artist John Byrne. Prior to Idris Elba, David St. Louis played a rendition of DuBois on the CW television series titled Supergirl.
