I was so saddened to hear about the passing of James Handy, a truly memorable character actor. Many of us will remember him from the recent hit, Top Gun: Maverick, but he had a long and wonderful career. He was 81 years old, and he’ll be deeply missed.
According to the New York Post, actor Reynaldo Handy died on Wednesday, June 3rd, from a stab wound to the chest. Police say Handy was found seriously injured outside a home in Tarzana and died after being taken to the hospital. Investigators believe Michael Gledhill, 44, stabbed Handy; Gledhill is the son of Handy’s girlfriend.
According to police, Gledhill called 911 on Wednesday morning, claiming, “I am the son of man, and I just killed the man of sin.” When officers arrived at the scene, they found the victim, Handy, unconscious and suffering from stab wounds. The exact number of stab wounds is still unknown. Shortly after the incident, Gledhill reportedly flagged down police and confessed to being the suspect. He was then arrested, and his bail was set at $2 million.
It remains unclear what led up to the alleged attack on Handy. An investigation is ongoing.
James Handy Had Dozens of Movie and TV Acting Credits
New York native and longtime Los Angeles resident, Handy began acting in films and television in the late 1970s. He’s best known for roles like Jimmy, the welcoming bartender in the 2022 film Top Gun: Maverick, which sadly became his final performance. He also appeared in the 1995 hit Jumanji, playing an exterminator, and as Lt. Byers in the 1989 action-comedy K-9, a role he revisited in the 1999 sequel, K-911.
Fans of the X-Men might remember Richard Handy as the doctor in the 2017 film Logan. He’s also known for playing Milton Briggs in the 1990 horror movie Arachnophobia, and appeared as a priest in M. Night Shyamalan’s Unbreakable in 2000. Throughout his career, Handy has been in many other films, including The Verdict, Brighton Beach Memoirs, The Rocketeer, Gang Related, Black and White, Ash Wednesday, Rounds, 15 Minutes, and Suburbicon.
Handy was a familiar face on television, appearing in several popular shows. He’s known for his recurring roles as Captain Haverhill on NYPD Blue, Matt Fielding on Melrose Place, Mike Heseltine on A Dangerous Life, Representative Joe Bruno on The West Wing, and Arthur Devlin on Alias. He also played a judge in the 1999 TV movie Time Served, and in a 1995 episode of The X-Files titled “2Shy,” he acted alongside David Duchovny as Alan Cross.
Handy has also appeared in several popular TV shows, including Quantum Leap, Murder, She Wrote, Criminal Minds, Castle, Rizzoli & Isles, Mulaney, Documentary Now!, and NCIS: Los Angeles.
