After five seasons, the hit Prime Video series The Boys has concluded, and while the finale sparked mixed reactions among viewers, everyone agrees the show delivered some truly shocking and outrageous moments. Even Jensen Ackles, who played Soldier Boy, was stunned by a scene he read in the final season’s script last year – so much so that he temporarily left the set. Now that the series has finished, we know which scene caused that reaction, and it’s quite a surprise.
During a recent appearance at the Supernatural convention, Jared Padalecki shared that a scene from Season 5, Episode 3 of The Boys was the most shocking for him. It wasn’t the violence, but the moment where Soldier Boy discovers Homelander (Antony Starr) naked in a bathtub filled with breast milk. A fan posted about it on X, and you can find the scene online if you’re curious.
That Scene Might Not Be the Most Gory, But It’s Upsetting In Its Own Right
It’s surprising to learn which scene caused Jared Padalecki to leave the set. Padalecki explained that when he first saw it last fall, he was shocked, immediately exclaiming, “Oh my god.”
Jared Padalecki’s line wasn’t mine, and I was meant to remain in my starting position,” Ackles explained. “However, I hadn’t noticed what was happening on set. We had practiced the scene, but when the cameras started recording, things changed, and I missed the adjustment. I walked onto the set and was shocked by what I saw, so I immediately walked back off.
He explained that he hadn’t been ready for the situation and doubted anyone else would be either, saying, “I apologized, explaining I wasn’t prepared for that.”
At first glance, the scene might not seem overly shocking, considering The Boys is known for pushing boundaries with disturbing content, like the infamous “Herogasm” episode and its many violent deaths. However, a scene doesn’t need gore to be deeply unsettling, and this one definitely qualifies. Homelander’s ongoing fixation with breast milk is already disturbing, but he takes it to a bizarre new level by bathing in it. What makes it even worse is the implication that the milk came from a hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit – meaning Homelander took milk intended for vulnerable, sick babies just so he could indulge in this strange act. That’s a truly grim and disturbing idea.
I’ve been following the story about Jensen Ackles and that infamous bathtub scene, and it’s gotten a little more nuanced. Apparently, he did step away from the set during filming, but not necessarily because he was upset by it. One fan on X pointed out that Ackles seemed more surprised and taken aback by just how weird the scene was in practice. I mean, even for a show as wild as The Boys, a breast milk bath is… a lot to visualize, let alone film! It’s just incredibly surreal. Of course, knowing The Boys universe, Ackles is probably used to bizarre and shocking content. And thankfully, even though the main show is finished, we’ll still get more of that world with the Vought Rising prequel coming to Prime Video in 2027, so the strangeness will continue!
