John Carpenter is a highly influential director with a career spanning over 50 years. He’s known for a diverse range of films in genres like horror, action, and science fiction, including classics such as Halloween, The Thing, and Big Trouble in Little China. However, a nine-year period where he didn’t direct any films was caused by a poorly received science fiction horror movie, which is now available to stream on Tubi.
John Carpenter’s 2001 sci-fi horror film, Ghosts of Mars, became available on Tubi on April 1st. Following the success of his 1998 film Vampires, Carpenter created this action-packed movie starring Ice Cube, Natasha Henstridge, and Jason Statham. Set in 2176, the story follows a Martian police team led by Lt. Melanie Ballard as they travel to a distant mining town to pick up a prisoner. They soon discover the miners have been taken over by angry, ancient Martian spirits, turning them into brutal killers, and the team must fight for their lives.
Ghosts of Mars Was a Massive Flop That Led to John Carpenter’s Break From Filmmaking
As a longtime fan of John Carpenter, it was really disheartening to see Ghosts of Mars stumble when it came out in 2001. It turned out to be his last film for almost a decade, until The Ward in 2010. Despite a $28 million budget, it only made around $14 million worldwide – a pretty big flop, honestly. Critics and audiences weren’t kind either; it landed with just 23% on the Tomatometer and 25% on the Popcornmeter on Rotten Tomatoes, making it one of his worst-received films. After that, Carpenter took a break from directing features, and he later told Crave Online (as reported by Far Out Magazine) that he was completely burned out and had simply lost his passion for making movies. He just didn’t want to do it anymore.
I’ve always felt Ghosts of Mars got a bad rap. It wasn’t necessarily a bad movie, just totally misunderstood when it came out. People expected a scary, serious horror film, but it was really meant to be a fun, over-the-top mix of genres – something John Carpenter himself was frustrated about. It’s not a cinematic masterpiece, but honestly, it’s a really enjoyable, energetic B-movie. Carpenter’s hard-rock score is fantastic, the cast is surprisingly great, and it’s packed with awesome practical effects and that classic 80s action vibe. Over the years, it’s actually become a bit of a cult favorite, and a lot of Carpenter fans now consider it seriously underrated.
Other Sci-Fi and Horror Movies Now on Tubi
Tubi expanded its selection of sci-fi and horror movies in April, adding dozens of titles to its already extensive library. New sci-fi options include films like Gemini Man, Sunshine, and Timecrimes. Horror fans can now stream both the original and remake versions of Carrie and Child’s Play, the complete original Scream trilogy, and Zombieland 2: Double Tap. Tubi also added some films that blend both genres, including Ghosts of Mars, Event Horizon, and Under the Skin, all available to stream for free.
