The Mandalorian and Grogu might just feel like the very first Star Wars movie.
Jon Favreau, who wrote and directed the film, hopes the upcoming Mandalorian and Grogu movie will feel like the original Star Wars: A New Hope. The film, a continuation of the Mandalorian TV series, centers on Din Djarin and Grogu as they track down Imperial Commander Coyne years after the Empire’s defeat. It will be the first time this popular duo appears on the big screen, and is scheduled for release on May 22, 2026.
In a conversation with Ash Crossan from ScreenRant, Jon Favreau shared his goal for The Mandalorian and Grogu – to create the same sense of excitement and wonder that audiences felt when they first saw A New Hope. He emphasized that, as the first Star Wars film in seven years, the movie is designed to appeal to both longtime fans and newcomers, even those who haven’t watched The Mandalorian series. Favreau drew on his own experiences as a fan, explaining the film aims to recapture that original feeling of magic and anticipation.
Check out what Favreau had to say below:
I wanted to start by saying how easy the movie is to enjoy. It reminded me of watching ‘A New Hope’ or the beginning of ‘Jedi.’ Were there any deliberate nods to those films? What kind of emotional response were you hoping to evoke in viewers?
Jon Favreau explained that over the past 49 years, Star Wars has explored many different styles, and people enjoy them all when they’re done well. Different audiences connect with different things. With this new release – the first time the show has been on the big screen in nearly seven years – they wanted to create a celebratory experience for fans, bringing back familiar elements and delivering a fun, enjoyable movie.
If you’re a Star Wars fan who hasn’t seen the show yet, we want you to be able to enjoy it. There’s plenty to discover, and you’ll recognize familiar elements. We especially wanted to create something for younger fans—kids who might have been too young to see a Star Wars movie in theaters a few years ago.
Everyone should experience Star Wars, whether in a theater or streaming on Disney+. The animation is fantastic and shows like The Mandalorian are perfect for family viewing. But what truly made me a fan was seeing it with my dad as a kid. I’ll never forget being in that audience, hearing the gasps and cheers when the blockade runner appeared, and feeling like the Imperial Cruiser was flying right over me. That one shot just kept going, and the crowd’s reaction – from wonder to laughter to excitement – was incredible.
When you’re young, you really absorb the atmosphere around you, almost like becoming a lifelong fan of a sports team. We aimed to capture that same feeling – a sense of knowing who to support and connecting with the characters. We wanted to create a world that felt both exciting and a little unpredictable, with moments of humor and suspense, but ultimately, a story that left you feeling optimistic. That was our main goal.
The upcoming theatrical release of The Mandalorian and Grogu will be the first Star Wars film in theaters since The Rise of Skywalker in 2019. It’s also the first Star Wars spin-off movie since Solo: A Star Wars Story came out in 2018. Although the film follows the events of The Mandalorian season 3, creator Jon Favreau has stated you don’t need to have watched the series to enjoy it. The filmmakers are aiming to capture the same emotional experience as the original Star Wars movie.
The film connects to the established story, featuring familiar characters who are now battling the last of the Empire. This places it firmly within the broader Star Wars universe, while still telling a fresh, new story that naturally continues the narrative from the TV series. Jon Favreau aims to capture a feeling that could revitalize the franchise in theaters. The movie’s success could be key to bringing Star Wars back into the spotlight for a wider audience.
With The Mandalorian and Grogu leading the charge, Disney is planning a new wave of Star Wars films for theaters. Next year will bring Star Wars: Starfighter, starring Ryan Gosling, set five years after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. Disney has three more Star Wars movies in the works as well. Considering The Mandalorian and Grogu is the first of these projects, it’s understandable why the filmmakers drew inspiration from the original A New Hope.
Now that the movie’s release is near, we’ll soon see just how much Dave Filoni’s work echoes A New Hope. The Mandalorian and Grogu are poised to take Star Wars in a fresh direction, offering a new chapter for the franchise as it returns to theaters with a strong impact.
