Jordan Roth Transforms Into a Sculpture in Must-See Met Gala Look

Jordan Roth knows his way around a Met Gala theme.

At the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s fundraising event on May 4, 2026, a guest attending for the seventh time made a striking impression. He wore a unique custom gown by Robert Wun featuring a sculpture shaped like a person seemingly hugging him from behind. (You can see photos of all the stars at the Met Gala here.)

As Jordan told Vogue of his look, “It’s a deeply magical experience to live inside this piece.”

Creating the stunning look wasn’t simple, but Jordan revealed his guaranteed method for making a memorable fashion statement at the year’s biggest event.

He said he always starts with a central idea, and what interests him about it. In this case, it began with a fascination with classical sculpture, specifically pieces featuring multiple figures.

Okay, so you will NOT believe what my idol did! This year’s Met Gala theme was all about ‘Costume Art’ and dressing like fashion is art, and he absolutely nailed it. He said he got the idea from one of his favorite paintings at the Met – it’s called Pygmalion and Galatea and it’s by this amazing 19th-century French artist, Jean-Léon Gérôme. Honestly, it was perfect and I KNEW he’d pull inspiration from something classic!

He describes the painting’s appeal as a sense of softness and ambiguity. It captures a fleeting moment where art and reality blend together, and where the artist seems to become one with their creation.

Honestly, when it was time for him to do something with his vision, Jordan was absolutely firm on one thing: he had to be woven into the bigger picture, be a piece of the whole thing. It wasn’t even a question for him; it was everything. He just needed to be a part of it, even a small part. I just get it, you know? It’s perfect.

He noted that paintings often feature a single person, but when there are multiple people, they’re usually depicted in a dramatic or emotional situation—whether it’s love, fear, or even conflict. There’s a sense of intense feeling when you see groups of figures in art.

The producer went on to explain, “I wondered what it would feel like to be one of the figures in that sculpture, to actually live inside it.”

As a huge fan, I was so fascinated to hear how Jordan perfected that incredible shadow effect! He explained it took over a dozen sketches – he really wanted to create a sense that he and his partner, even though it was just a shadow, could truly dance together and tell a story as they moved. It was all about making that connection feel real and letting the dance unfold naturally.

Even though Jordan really likes the 3-D printed figure, he won’t be able to include it in most of the evening’s activities.

As he put it, “I don’t want to be serving my neighbor’s soup to my sculpture!”
