Jujutsu Kaisen’s Sequel Doesn’t Need The Original Characters To Carry On The Story

Please be aware that this article contains spoilers for the Jujutsu Kaisen manga. Just one year after the main story concluded, Gege Akutami launched a sequel manga called Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo, with Yuji Iwasaki providing the illustrations. The new story is set 68 years after the events of the Culling Game, showing how the world of Jujutsu has evolved over time. While the world has changed, the threat of curses still exists. The Jujutsu society continues to operate, and thankfully, they no longer have to contend with the problematic Elders who consistently made things difficult. However, a new challenge has emerged: over 50,000 Simurians, an alien race, have arrived in Japan as refugees.

This manga features characters with abilities similar to Jujutsu sorcerers, leading to the incident being classified as a high-level Special Grade threat – on par with Sukuna. The story explores the attempt of two groups to live together peacefully, but that peace is shattered by a single conflict. Currently at 14 chapters, the manga occasionally revisits its main characters, though it remains compelling even when they aren’t present.

The Original Characters Didn’t Overshadow The New Ones

The new series, Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo, successfully builds on the original without letting its main characters steal the show. From the very beginning, it shares what happened to familiar faces like Yuta Okkotsu, Maki Zenin, Yuji Itadori, Nobara Kugisaki, and Hana Kursu. Plus, it brings back Mahito, a major villain from the first series.

The story will introduce new characters, but they’ll primarily support the core group who are driving the plot forward. Modulo is planned to finish in a few months, as it was always intended as a brief sequel lasting only three volumes. Things are becoming more captivating as conflict grows between the Simurians and sorcerers, fueled by cultural differences and miscommunications.

Tensions rose during the talks when the Simurians and the sorcerers argued about the destruction of spirits they both considered holy. Cross attempted to mediate, but was shot by Yakumaru, immediately escalating the conflict into a full-scale war. Though Yuka Okkotsu and Dabura haven’t fought yet, their upcoming battle is one of the most eagerly awaited events in the story.
