Just Cause Studio’s Job Listings Indicate New Project is Live-Service Multiplayer

Recent job postings from Avalanche Studios, the team behind Just Cause, suggest they’re building their next game using Unreal Engine instead of their in-house Apex Engine. The postings, which include roles for a technical director and gameplay systems programmer, point to this shift in technology.

The company has finished the initial prototype phase of its project and is now preparing for full production. They need a technical director with a strong background in Unreal Engine, capable of handling all aspects of development – from building fundamental systems to ensuring smooth performance and a stable online experience.

A job posting for a gameplay systems programmer gives us a better idea of the multiplayer features coming in Avalanche Studios’ next game. The position is key to building features and content that can handle many players at once. The ideal candidate will also have experience with live game updates and adding new features to existing games.

Recently, a job posting at the studio hinted at a new, large-scale game in development – an “unannounced AAA project.” The position, for a senior technical designer, needed someone versatile who could handle technical design, gameplay, and team coordination. The posting also mentioned they were still using the Apex Engine. However, plans may have shifted during the game’s early development, and the recent release of Unreal Engine 6 by Epic Games could have influenced a switch to that engine instead.

The studio co-founder and chief creative officer hinted that the new project might not be part of the Just Cause series. Christofer Sundberg explained on social media that not enough of the team who worked on previous Just Cause games are currently at the studio. He also shared some details about the making of Just Cause 4 in a series of tweets.

He explained that the issues with Just Cause 4 stemmed from a shift in his role away from creative direction towards more business-focused tasks, as well as difficulties with the publisher, team dynamics, and other factors. He believes the series needs to rediscover its innovative spirit, embrace bold ideas, challenge expectations, and create games that others deem unachievable.

Avalanche Studios last released a major game, RAGE 2, in 2019. Since then, other teams within the Avalanche Studios Group have put out titles like Call of the Wild: The Angler (2022) and Ravenbound (2023). The studio itself shifted its focus to creating and publishing its own original games.

In 2024, Avalanche Studios made the tough choice to close its studios in New York and Montreal, resulting in the loss of 50 jobs.

Making this decision was incredibly tough, but we feel it’s essential for the long-term health of the company,” a company statement read. “Right now, our priority is supporting our employees during this difficult period. We deeply appreciate everything those who are leaving have done, and we’re still dedicated to delivering amazing games to our players.
