Kagurabachi Achieves Major Milestone Ahead of Anime Debut

I’ve been following the buzz around Kagurabachi, and it’s great to see it finally getting an anime adaptation after just over two years! The manga, created by Takeru Hokazono, launched in September 2023 and instantly became a hit – the first chapter went viral. It had a remarkably strong start, which pretty much set it up for an anime announcement. Thinking about recent anime successes like Jujutsu Kaisen and Demon Slayer, both of those series were already popular manga before their anime came out. Jujutsu Kaisen had sold 2.5 million copies before the anime, and Demon Slayer was already at 3.5 million in circulation right before its premiere.

Despite not yet having an anime adaptation, Kagurabachi has become a huge success, exceeding the sales records of other popular manga and reaching over 4 million copies sold. The series’ official X account confirmed these numbers include both physical books and digital downloads. While 11 volumes are currently available in Japan, only 7 have been released in English. This is because it takes time to license and translate each volume for international release, leading to a delay for English-speaking readers.

Kagurabachi‘s Anime Is Guaranteed to Be a Major Hit

It’s unusual for a new series to generate this much buzz right from the start, even in a popular magazine like Shonen Jump. With over 4 million copies sold, it’s already a huge success, and an anime adaptation is sure to make it even more popular. The series has captured public attention since its very first chapter, so an anime announcement, though a bit delayed, was always expected.

The anime adaptation started appearing online in 2024, shortly after the manga was first released. This followed a report that Shueisha had trademarked the series for things like animation, which is an important step for getting the rights to make a new anime. Fans saw this as a positive sign that the anime was moving forward.

What Is Kagurabachi About?

Kagurabachi is a gripping story about revenge, family bonds, and fulfilling one’s destiny. It follows Chihiro Rokuhira, an 18-year-old, as he seeks vengeance for his father’s death. After his father is killed by a rival group of sorcerers, Chihiro inherits his father’s legendary sword and dedicates the next three years to tracking down those responsible and recovering the stolen blades.

The manga finished its initial storyline in February and immediately began a second part with a new story arc. The first part was made up of three arcs, the longest of which was ‘Sword Bearer Assassination.’ The ending of the first part brought significant changes to the story, bringing Chihiro closer to fulfilling his lifelong ambition and becoming more like his father.
