Channel 5 has announced the airdate for the first episode of its new limited series, Suspect.
A new drama focusing on Kate McCann, Madeleine McCann’s mother, and featuring a controversial interrogation, will begin airing on Channel 5 from Wednesday, May 20th at 9pm. The role of Kate McCann is played by Laura Bayston, known for her work in ‘Slow Horses’.
The film centers on Kate as she’s investigated by Portuguese police in July 2007, shortly after her daughter went missing. It also explores how she was affected by intense and unfavorable coverage from the media worldwide.
According to reports from 5, the situation rapidly changed from harmless to serious when police informed Kate they no longer accepted her story and were now treating her as a formal suspect.
Detectives informed her they had proof linking her to the disappearance, and warned her she’d be charged with murder if she didn’t confess. It’s a parent’s worst fear, and in this case, the situation was particularly horrifying.
The drama is based on official police material, documentary evidence, and recorded testimony.
The organization stated it will demonstrate how faulty evidence resulted in the interrogation and unfairly damaged the individual’s reputation for years to come.
In 2008, Portuguese police officially stated that Kate and Gerry McCann, who had consistently maintained their innocence, were no longer considered suspects in Madeleine’s disappearance.

The series will continue with “Suspect: The Road Rage Killer,” telling the story of Tracie Andrews (played by Emma Rigby, known from Hollyoaks). Andrews received a life sentence for the murder of her fiancé, Lee Harvey.
According to reports, Tracie said her fiancé died after being attacked in a road rage incident.
I was absolutely stunned when, after a truly awful press conference, she suddenly became the prime suspect in his murder. It was incredible to watch how quickly things changed. The detectives started digging again, re-examining everything – the timings, what everyone said, and all the forensic evidence. It was heartbreaking to see her, who initially came in just as a witness, slowly become the main person they suspected.
The movie shows how her initial story fell apart, how the investigation took a different direction, and what happened as a result of that new focus.
A release date for the second film in the anthology series is yet to be confirmed.
Suspect: Kate McCann will premiere from Wednesday 20 May at 9pm on 5.
