Keanu Reeves has been a reliable and popular actor for over forty years, starting with roles in the 1980s. He became a household name with films like Bill & Ted and later starred as Neo in The Matrix and John Wick in the John Wick series. While often taking leading roles, Reeves has also frequently appeared in supporting parts. However, his latest film has put him firmly back in the spotlight as the main star, and audiences are clearly enjoying his return.
Keanu Reeves returned to leading roles this weekend with the release of Outcome, a new dark comedy on Apple TV directed by Jonah Hill. For three years, Reeves had only appeared in supporting roles, with John Wick: Chapter 4 in 2023 being his last starring performance. Remarkably, Outcome is only the fourth film this decade where Reeves is the main star – the others being The Matrix Resurrections and Bill & Ted Face the Music, which featured a lot of other leading actors as well. Despite quickly becoming popular on streaming services, the film hasn’t received entirely positive reviews.
Keanu Reeves’ Outcome Debuts at #1 on Apple Amid Terrible Reviews
In the new film Outcome, Keanu Reeves plays Reef Hawk, a famous actor facing a potential career downfall. He’s forced to examine his past and personal struggles to try and save his reputation. Reeves is joined by a talented ensemble cast including Jonah Hill, Cameron Diaz, Matt Bomer, Laverne Cox, David Spade, and Martin Scorsese. Despite the star power and the film reaching #1 on Apple TV in most countries worldwide (except Gambia and South Korea, where it’s #2, according to Flixpatrol), it hasn’t garnered a large fanbase.
As of today, the movie Outcome has received largely negative reviews. It currently has a 27% rating from critics and a slightly higher 32% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Critic Peter Travers found it lacked humor, while The Wrap gave it a very low 1.5 out of 5 stars, criticizing its lack of substance. Even The New York Times was unimpressed, calling it unmemorable streaming content that doesn’t make good use of its talented cast and composer, Jon Brion.
Not only is Outcome Keanu Reeves’ first starring role in three years, but it also marks a break in his impressive track record with critics. It’s the first movie he’s been in for eight years to receive a negative score on review websites. Before Outcome, his last poorly-received film was 2018’s Replicas, which only scored 9%. In between those two films, fifteen of his projects earned positive reviews, but that streak has now come to an end.
