Peacock’s remake of a Tom Hanks cult classic starring Keke Palmer is returning for another season.
Keke Palmer has been incredibly busy lately with several projects, including the films The Pickup, Good Fortune, Dread Manor, and I Love Boosters, which premiered at SXSW 2026 and will be in theaters May 22nd. Tom Hanks has also had a full year, appearing in Wes Anderson’s The Phoenician Scheme and reprising his role as Woody in Toy Story 5, set to release on June 19th.
Peacock has officially ordered another season of ‘The Burbs,’ starring Tom Palmer and based on the 1989 film starring Tom Hanks. The news comes roughly two months after the show’s eight-episode premiere on February 8th. The series debuted alongside Super Bowl LVIII on both NBC and Peacock, and was heavily promoted with commercials during the game.
The series The Burbs broke Peacock’s record for the most views in a single day, ultimately racking up 1.7 billion minutes of watch time. It consistently ranked among the top 10 original series in the U.S. for four consecutive weeks, according to Nielsen. Here’s a statement from Lisa Katz, President of Scripted Content at NBC & Peacock, about the show’s renewal:
We’re delighted viewers enjoyed the first season of The ’Burbs and are excited to continue the story with Keke and the fantastic cast in Hinkley Hills. We want to give a big shout-out to the writers, producers, and crew who successfully reimagined the classic film into something fresh, funny, and relatable for today’s audiences.
The movie The ‘Burbs featured Tom Hanks as Ray Peterson, a man who becomes wary of his new neighbors, the Klopeks. A recent remake on Peacock keeps the same suburban location and the idea of a suspicious newcomer, and includes fun references to the original, like a brief appearance by Tom Hanks himself. However, the remake tells a new story with different characters.
Samira Fisher (Naomi Palmer) and her husband, Rob (Jack Whitehall), a local boy, move to Hinkley Hills to raise their new baby. Samira soon becomes wary of their new neighbor, Gary Wilson (Justin Kirk), and begins investigating him, which leads her to uncover hidden truths about Rob and the town’s past. She gets help from three neighbors: Lynn Gardner (Julia Duffy), a widow; Dana Richards (Paula Pell), a former Marine; and the eccentric Tod Mann (Mark Proksch).
So, the finale of The Burbs definitely gave me some answers about Gary and the big mystery, but it ended on a huge cliffhanger! Thankfully, Celeste Hughey, the creator, has told ScreenRant she’s already got the whole second season mapped out – a 10-page pitch is ready to go! She says Samira and Rob will still be central to the story, but we’ll also get to learn more about the other characters and what makes them tick. I’m really excited to see where she takes it!
Beyond attracting a huge audience and being renewed for another season, ‘The Burbs’ received mostly good reviews. On Rotten Tomatoes, critics gave it a ‘Certified Fresh’ rating of 78%, while viewers scored it at 68%. This is a better score than another movie starring Tom Hanks, which currently has a 58% average.
