It’s tough to define a single, perfect version of Batman. Since he first appeared in 1939, the character has been reimagined many times in comics, on television, in movies, and in video games. These different versions range from very serious and dark to lighthearted and even funny, with some Batmans telling jokes and even dancing!
LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight celebrates different interpretations of Batman while maintaining the fun and humor that LEGO games are known for. The game isn’t just one of the best Batman titles in years—it’s an experience that most Batman fans are sure to enjoy.

Legacy of the Dark Knight Weaves All of Batman’s Big-Screen Stories Together to Great Effect
What I really loved about LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight is how it pulls from pretty much all the Batman movies. It’s cool because my origin story felt like it started with Batman Begins, but then other characters and stuff reminded me of Tim Burton’s films, The Batman (2022), or even the campy Batman & Robin. It gives the whole game this really familiar vibe, but it’s not stuck on just one version of Batman, which keeps things fresh and fun. It’s like getting a little bit of every Batman era!
One of the joys of LEGO Batman is seeing TT Games put their signature humorous spin on classic Batman moments. This keeps the gameplay fresh, even if you’re very familiar with the source material, as fans have likely seen these scenes many times before.
Beyond the main storyline, the game is packed with nods and references to various Batman versions. It often felt like spotting a hidden detail – similar to Leonardo DiCaprio’s character in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood – whenever I recognized a clever easter egg from TT Games. While too many references can feel forced, in LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, they actually added a lot to my enjoyment of the game.
Arkham Fans Will Feel Right at Home With Legacy of the Dark Knight

LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight plays a lot like the popular Batman: Arkham games. It features fast-paced fighting, gliding through the city, and driving the Batmobile – all elements fans of the Arkham trilogy will recognize. Since a new Arkham game hasn’t been released in over ten years, Legacy of the Dark Knight stands out as one of the most fun Batman games in recent memory, demonstrating that there’s still a strong demand for this type of gameplay.
While LEGO Batman borrows from the Arkham series, it doesn’t quite reach the same level of polish. The combat feels less intense and fast-paced, which can make it repetitive after a while. The stealth sections in Legacy of the Dark Knight are also harder, mainly because the levels aren’t designed as effectively for a purely stealthy approach.
Okay, so playing Legacy of the Dark Knight isn’t just about being Batman! You can switch it up and play as Catwoman, Robin, Batgirl, and even Commissioner Gordon. Each character has their own cool abilities, which really shakes things up – not just in fights, but when you’re trying to solve puzzles too. Honestly, it makes the game awesome for co-op, because everyone can actually contribute something different to each level, and it doesn’t feel like one person is carrying the team.
Legacy of the Dark Knight’s Gotham City Will Keep You Very Busy

Outside of the main story levels in Legacy of the Dark Knight, you’ll spend most of your time exploring Gotham City. Luckily, there’s a lot to do! Like other LEGO games, it’s packed with things to collect. The side missions feel similar to those in the Arkham games – think AR challenges and Riddler puzzles – so they’re pretty familiar. Even though some of these tasks felt a bit repetitive, I still enjoyed completing them because they unlocked new customization options and helped me improve my character’s abilities.
One small problem with the open world in Legacy of the Dark Knight is that it doesn’t always clearly show you where to go. While you can buy upgrades to help find items and challenges, simply discovering their locations can be surprisingly difficult. Fixing this would make exploring the game world much more enjoyable.
While LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight doesn’t offer a lot of original content, it’s hard not to enjoy. It’s essentially a celebration of Batman’s history, drawing from his appearances in comics, movies, and more over the decades. I would have liked to see some fresh ideas, but overall, playing the game was a consistently fun experience that reminded me why I love Batman in the first place.
I’ve been playing LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, and it’s out now on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC! They’re also planning a version for the new Nintendo Switch 2 down the line. Just so you know, the publisher sent me a review copy, and I played it on PS5 to give you my thoughts.
