Lin-Manuel Miranda Lands Perfect Movie Follow-Up To Andrew Garfield’s 88% RT Hit

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Lin-Manuel Miranda will direct a film version of Dave Malloy’s 2019 musical, Octet. The a cappella musical centers around a support group dealing with internet addiction, and their meetings take place in a church basement. Dave Malloy is also writing the screenplay and will executive produce the film, along with Diana DiMenna and Johnny Holland and Owen Panettieri of 5000 Broadway Productions. Luis A. Miranda, Jr., Julie Oh of 5000 Broadway Productions, and John Skidmore of Best Kept Secret Productions are producing the movie.

I’ve been captivated by Octet ever since I first saw it in November 2019. Dave Malloy’s music is incredibly versatile and powerful, and it feels more important now than ever. It’s stuck with me, and that’s why I’m revisiting it.

Dave Malloy is thrilled that Lin-Manuel Miranda is adapting his show, Octet, into a movie. He was incredibly impressed by Miranda’s film, tick, tick…Boom!, and feels honored that such a talented figure in musical theater is taking on his work. Malloy believes Miranda’s skills as a storyteller, their shared interests, and their friendship will result in something truly special, and he’s excited about the incredibly talented cast.

As of now, the movie’s cast hasn’t been officially announced. However, comments from Malloy suggest that several well-known actors are already committed to the project.
