After a 32-year wait, a sequel to a classic game first released by Sega is finally available. The original game actually started as an arcade title in 1989, then came to the Sega Mega-CD in 1993, the PlayStation in 1995, and finally the Sega Saturn in 1996. However, all of these earlier versions were only released in Japan, meaning players in the West couldn’t officially experience it without importing a copy. This new sequel is available worldwide.
Players on PC and Nintendo Switch can now purchase and download the classic shoot ’em up, Night Striker Gear, for $18.99. This release is handled by M2, not Sega. Currently, there are no plans to bring the game to PlayStation or Xbox. While there isn’t a dedicated version for the new Nintendo Switch 2, it is playable on the console through backward compatibility.
Original vs New
The first Night Striker game wasn’t made by Sega either; it was developed by Taito, who were later acquired by Square Enix. Taking cues from Sega hits like Out Run and Space Harrier, Night Striker was a shooting game that received a lukewarm response when it first came out, which makes this new sequel a bit unexpected. It wasn’t a standout title on arcades or the Sega Mega-CD, and it was only released in Japan, so it’s hard to say how many players outside of Japan would be interested in it.
The new game is a fresh update to its classic original. You’ll play as a Night Striker, part of a UN special forces team, and your mission is to protect the guests of the Lotus Raai resort and theme park when a dangerous plot puts everyone at risk. You’ll be using a special hovercar, called the INTER-GRAY, to accomplish this.
If you’re not feeling this wave of Sega memories, don’t worry – there’s more coming! Tomorrow, October 24th, a remastered version of a beloved Sega Dreamcast game from 1999 will be available on PlayStation and Xbox.
