‘Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum’ Teaser Announces Jamie Dornan as Aragorn & Full Main Cast

A new teaser trailer revealed at CinemaCon confirms that another Lord of the Rings movie, The Hunt for Gollum, is in development. Andy Serkis will return as Gollum, and the story will focus on Aragorn’s pursuit of the creature before the events of The Fellowship of the Ring. However, Viggo Mortensen will not reprise his role as Aragorn; a different actor will take on the part.

Warner Bros. just released a first look at The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, revealing that Jamie Dornan (known for Belfast) will play Strider, also called Aragorn. The film will also bring back familiar faces from the original series, including Andy Serkis as Gollum and Sméagol, Ian McKellen as Gandalf, Lee Pace as Thranduil, and Elijah Wood as Frodo. Joining them are new cast members Kate Winslet, playing Marigol, and Leo Woodall as Halvard. While rumors suggested Woodall (The White Lotus) might play Aragorn, he’ll actually be taking on the role of Halvard.

The upcoming film, The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, tells the story of Aragorn’s years-long quest, sent by Gandalf, to find Gollum and prevent Sauron from regaining the One Ring. The movie will feature several characters fans know and love from the original Lord of the Rings trilogy, including Gandalf and Frodo. A major point of discussion has been who would portray Aragorn, as Viggo Mortensen wasn’t initially slated to return (though the filmmakers considered using CGI to make him look younger). Now that the cast is set, production is expected to begin in May. You can watch a short preview below.

Jamie Dornan’s role in the latest Lord of the Rings project is likely his most significant to date, but he’s no stranger to major film franchises. He previously gained widespread recognition for playing Christian Grey in the Fifty Shades trilogy, and has since appeared in films like Robin Hood, Heart of Stone, the Academy Award-winning Belfast, and A Haunting in Venice. Now, with a role connected to the legendary character Aragorn, Dornan has the opportunity to leave his mark on one of cinema’s most beloved series as Lord of the Rings makes a comeback to the big screen.

More to come.

The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is set to hit theaters on Dec. 17, 2027.
